Degrees / Training / Special Info:
BA, Central Washington University, Jazz Performance
Awards:

2013 - Thomas Gause Award for Outstanding Musical Performance 2012 - jazz band selected to perform at the Jazz Education Network Conference (JENC)

Overview:
I studied music at Central Washington University. While there, I took part in many different musical ensembles, such as jazz combos, big band, and guitar ensemble. Playing in the jazz combos and big band gave me the opportunity to travel. The jazz band played at the 2012 Jazz Educators Network Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. After graduating, I played in the top 40s bands on cruise ships around the world. Thereafter, I moved to Los Angeles where I have been playing and teaching the last 3 years.
EXPERIENCE
I was fortunate to have great music teachers growing up. I was both in band at school and took lessons privately. I was taught the importance of playing with good technique and posture. One of the greatest lessons I have learned from my teachers is the value of developing your "ear". In other words, being able to hear music and figure out how to play it. I have had a wide range of musical experiences that influence my teaching and appreciation for different styles of music. I enjoy all styles and genres of music, but have always
METHODS USED
For any of my students, I usually first ask them what kind of music they listen to. I make sure they know the basics of the instrument. I ask them if they know any music theory. I usually have them play something so I can see where their technique is at. From there, we start learning songs. I think learning new songs is one of the best ways to progress and stay enthusiastic about music. We'll usually learn songs that the student is interested in. During the lesson, I am writing down things for the student to work on before out next lesson.
LESSON STYLE
My top priority in lessons is that the student has a good experience. If you enjoy what you're doing, it will never feel like a chore. I never want to overwhelm my students with too many new concepts at once. I always break things down into bite-sized pieces. Eventually, all those small concepts we work on add up into something rewarding, like playing a song. I think it is important to learn the fundamentals first, such a playing in time, learning basic chords and their names, and knowing a little music theory.
