BA, Conn. College Music/Art History
I've been a full-time pro musician since the '90s, after double-majoring in Music & Art History at Connecticut College. I've toured all over the US, Germany, France, UK, Sweden, Denmark with a wide variety of musicians including Sophie B Hawkins, Kate Pierson, Perry Farrell, Bill Frisell, BETTY, Heather Greene, Mary McBride, Big Daddy Love & Pleasuredog. I have a number of TV credits for both Themes & Music Placement, including the Theme Song for Showtime's THE L WORD, & a song on the upcoming season of HBO's hit drama, The DEUCE. Recorded over 30 albums as guitarist, with Producer credits on 8 of those, & Songwriter credits on nearly all.
I started giving lessons in college. I needed income, and I found that I enjoyed the one-on-one nature of teaching. I've been teaching on and off since then, only pausing to tour. I've taught many absolute beginners, each of whom presented a unique challenge to me as an instructor. I've also taught many professional musicians who had specific needs. Many students start out just wanting to strum along with YouTube or with friends. As they develop their abilities, they begin to appreciate the value of proper guitar technique and Music Theory. Goals often evolve as musical ability increases. It is very gratifying for me as an instructor to watch a student's abilities blossom.
My method varies from student to student. No two students learn exactly the same way. My visual aids consist of TABLATURE, FRETBOARD GRIDS and MUSIC NOTATION. Discovering the most effective way to use these methods of communication to teach an individual student is my most important responsibility. That said, I start with a C-MAJOR SCALE to introduce the concepts of MELODY and HARMONY. Once basic scales, melodies and chords can be executed we shift focus from the fretting hand to the picking hand to tackle RHYTHM. At this point we can begin to play songs. From here, we use the student's goals and music preference to guide the curriculum.
You don't "work" a guitar...learning to play one should be FUN! If you're a singer/songwriter, we'll study fingerpicking, & playing and singing at the same time. If you're a hard rock shredder, we'll study executing exotic scales with speed, precision and attitude. Jazz players will have an emphasis on reading and Music Theory. I'll serve as your guide on the path to achieving your musical goals. And if you're not sure exactly what you want to play, we'll take the time to figure it out, all the while playing songs that make you look forward to practicing.
Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
Are you sure that's your only availability? The more availability you easier it will be to arrange a teacher for you.
