BA, The University of Vermont
As a teacher, I am devoted to helping students discover the joy of playing music. I studied guitar at Berklee College of Music and the University of Vermont, where I graduated in 2008.
I began teaching guitar as a senior in high school, and have continued since. I currently teach from my home studio, which is a low-key, encouraging environment. I like to foster in my students the understanding that playing music should not seem like work. Not only does a sense of fun help students want to practice more often, but it also helps what they play to mean more to them.
As a teacher, I believe in helping the student learn to play what he or she wants to play. I don't believe in having students play materials that they are unexcited about -- excitement makes better musicians than a lot of senseless and joyless repetition does. I produce materials for my students, and help them to select appropriate books that will help them grow. There are many different kinds of students, and I tailor my lessons to the students' individual needs. I recently began offering recordings of lessons to students so that they have access to the lesson during the intervening week.
I like to make my lessons about playing. This seems obvious, but many teachers spend too much time talking and not enough time engaging in music-making with their students. I will typically start by reviewing the ideas and work of the previous lesson, so that we can clear up any problems, and I can offer tips on difficult issues. Then, the lesson becomes student guided -- I am willing to help the student with what he or she wants to work on -- a song, a musical style or genre, a technique, songwriting and composition, improvisation, you name it!
Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
Are you sure that's your only availability? The more availability you easier it will be to arrange a teacher for you.
