Overview:

Playing drums since the fifth grade, I have had years of experience learning not only what it takes to be a good musician but how music can help create positive life experiences and build strong characters. A five year marching member of the Pride of Arizona snare drum line, I have gained invaluable leadership and work ethic skills, which I utilizes in all aspects of life, whether it is in regards to music or my everyday interactions with other people. In addition to my time marching in a leadership position with both the University’s band and with Fusion Indoor Percussion, my time teaching marching bands and drumlines at the high school level has brought his ensembles multiple “Superior” rankings at the ABODA State marching festival and most recently a 5th place ranking in WGAZ’s “Scholastic A” division. In 2008, I had the honor to perform in the famed Carnegie Hall with the Rincon/University’s top concert band, performing movements from Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana,” among other pieces. From 2009 to 2010, I spent much of my free time volunteering at a church in the southwest side of Tucson, working with the “Royal Rangers,” a youth group whose aim is to keep kids off the street and to introduce a positive influence in their lives. I taught the group’s drumline, which consisted of youth from grades 5-12. The drumline performed several concerts around town, including the veteran’s day parade, which was met with much enthusiasm from audience members. Another musical project I have been a part of was playing drum kit for several local rock bands, including the ska band “The Shkanks”, who opened for acts such as Reel Big Fish and the Aggrolites. The band's music was described as an upbeat Pop-Crunk Ska band with a fun, and unique sound, and highly energetic performances. In addition to this group, I also have three years experience playing with the University’s own “Pride of Arizona Pep Band,” which includes a vast and diverse repertoire of music, ranging from rock, to funk, to latin, to swing.

EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching various ensembles and giving private lessons for the past 8 years. My main specialty would certainly be marching percussion, but I am also very well-versed in a multitude of styles on the drum kit as well, which I am more than happy to explore with any student.

METHODS USED

My main philosophies when it comes to teaching are as follows: 1) No two students are the same, and every student is going to have unique strengths that can be exploited and expanded upon 2) Without a strong grasp of fundamental technique, timing, and stick control, progress into more advanced concepts becomes very difficult 3) Music is supposed to be FUN! If the musician doesn't feel good while playing or performing, then it isn't being done correctly. Talent can only take a student so far. The passion has to be there, and it is my main goal to get the student to love music.

LESSON STYLE

The first step with any student is to evaluate where they are as a player in order to make sure that they are not receiving info that is either ahead of or behind their skill level. After that, I evaluate which info would be most beneficial to them based on what I am seeing in their current ability. For home practice, I make sure to encourage them to not practice for a set amount of time, but to reach specific goals. I usually find that this not only saves the student time while practicing, but it is much more effective in learning new material. The way students react to quick progress based on these methods is always an encouraging sight!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
