Overview:
I absolutely love teaching music and watching my students grow in their musical skills and confidence!  I graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education and studied clarinet with Dr. Theodore Jahn and piano with Margaret Strahl.  While at UGA, I played with the Redocat Marching Band, Symphonic Band and various woodwind ensembles.  Recently I have been playing clarinet and piano with the Gwinnett Community Band and volunteer with different homeshool band groups.  I have also played piano for church and weddings and volunteered with the children's music ministry.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching private piano lessons for over 12 years and private clarinet and alto saxophone lessons for the past 5 years.  I enjoy watching students grow in their knowledge of music and have children of my own, so I know what it means to be patient and encouraging with all ages (including adults)!  I am also the Beginning Band Director of the Athens Area Homeschool Band and assist with solo festivals and auditions. My private students are encouraged to participate in a Christmas recital and spring music recital which is excellent motivation for them to practice and show off their skills.  I also tailor the lessons to the individual's needs.  For example, I use different method books with my younger piano students than with my older students or adults.  My clarinet and saxophone students are also encouraged to grow, whether it may to audition for a new group, prepare for a District or All-State Band audition, or play in a recital.
METHODS USED
For my younger, early elementary piano students, I use the Bastien Piano Basics.  For my older school-aged students, I typically use the Faber Piano Adventures series, usually starting off with the acclerated book for the older students.  For adults and some of my high school students, I use the Alfred Adult series.  All age levels will be taught music theory in conjunction with the regular music lesson, which gives them a deeper understanding of the music that they are learning! My band students will be taught based on what method book their director is using, whether it be Essential Elements, Standard of Excellence, etc.  Their lessons may be expanded upon by providing duets or solos for them to play.  I also encourage the older students to learn their scales and possibly audition for All-Sate Band if so desired.  All of my band students that have been playing for a least a year are encouraged to participate in an annual spring music recital.
LESSON STYLE
I really enjoy seeing a student grow in their understanding and knowledge of music!  Music can become a life-long passion for many and also provides benefits of the students learning self-discipline, confidence, and pride in learning something new!  I am patient and encouraging with all ages and provide opportunites for all to grow!
