ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
In process: MA, Augsburg College, EducationBA, Augsburg College, Music
Overview:
I'm a multi-instrumentalist with a very wide range of musical experience. I graduated from Augsburg College in 2006 and have performed professionally on guitar, bass, drums, trombone, and tuba. From 2007 to 2009, I performed on Carnival Cruise Lines as a jazz and pop trombonist. Beginning in 2009, I participated in Twin Cities theater productions as a singer, actor, and musical director. In 2013, I went back to Augsburg to pursue a master's degree in education, including a graduate-level recital on trombone, and this spring I will be licensed as a K-12 music teacher in Minnesota. I have most recently been playing guitar and trombone with local Somali artists.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught private guitar and trombone lessons occasionally since college. I have also been working with high school students in small groups at clinics and while visiting schools since I began studying education. I recently student taught for a total of 17 weeks at Lincoln Center Elementary in South St. Paul and Central High in St. Paul, including classroom music, band and orchestra conducting, and band sectionals. The focus of my teaching has been musical independence. I want my students to be able to play their instruments without a teacher looking over their shoulders, and this means learning good practice habits, practicing good tone, and playing with confidence and joy.
METHODS USED
I start with each new student by assessing that student's goals, needs, and prior training. I then use a combination of published method books and custom lesson materials developed for each student. A priority of mine is to emphasize both note reading and playing by ear. Rock guitarists often do not read very much and learn to copy recordings, while students on band instruments often focus heavily on reading and do not learn to play expressively without sheet music. I want to help my students to fill in these gaps to become more well-rounded musicians. Guitar students usually come in with specific bands or styles they want to play, so I will spend some time exploring that music to find the most accessible entry points and then start working on the basic techniques for a student's chosen style(s), supplemented with Hal Leonard method books to build reading skills. For beginning band students, I favor the Jump Right In method for its inclusion of singing, complicated rhythms, and improvisation. I focus heavily on tone quality to develop critical listening skills. Adults and more advanced youth players need much more discussion of their personal musical goals and the ways that I can support them.
LESSON STYLE
When a student's lesson only lasts for 30-60 minutes each week, it is important to make sure they have the tools to work productively on their own time for the rest of the week. So I teach by modeling effective practice techniques and encouraging self-reflection. I want students, even at the beginning level, to be able to listen critically to their own playing, identify their needs for improvement, and apply appropriate practice strategies to achieve their short-term goals. It is also vital for students at all levels to experience frequent success to sustain motivation. I do this by choosing material that students like and that is within their ability level, and providing an interesting performing context by playing along with them or providing a recording for accompaniment.
