Overview:
Hello! I'm Steve - a performer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist from Los Angeles, CA. I'm a recent graduate of Oberlin College, with a Bachelors of Music and Arts in Jazz Performance and English Literature. I specialize in a variety of genres and styles, including Jazz, Blues, Folk, Classic Rock, Indie-Rock, Pop, Songwriting, Improvisation, European Classical, and Samba / Bossa Nova. I've been teaching music for well over 10 years to just about every age and experience level, and in that time have honed in on a teaching method that I find the most effective, accessible, and results-oriented. My lessons include a well-rounded understanding of music theory (harmony, melody, rhythm, scales, chords), musical notation, tab notation, and ear-training ("aural skills"). But most importantly for me, teaching is about sharing my love for music and getting your fingers on the fretboard!
EXPERIENCE
I first started teaching music early on in high school and I continued to teach through college to students of all ages and skill levels. My teaching is informed both by the training I received in Oberlin and the experience I've gained from bands and other projects. I have a strong background in songwriting and improvising, and I love finding ways to combine classical, jazz, and experimental with more popular forms of pop, rock, and folk music. In the past few years, I have been lucky to perform at venues across the United States, lead workshops in Beijing China as part of a musical outreach tour, closely accompany and participate in an improv dance class, and learn from the likes of teachers such as Robert Ferrazza, Chris Wesiman, Billy Hart, Gary Bartz, Jamey Haddad, Ethan Iverson, and members of the Punch Brothers.
METHODS USED
For all of my students, I first try to gage what music interests them and form a personalized lesson plan around that. I prioritize getting my students actually playing the instrument showing them basic chords, scales, and shapes so that they can start making music and feeling comfortable with the simpler concepts on their own. From there, I like to introduce basic music theory, sight-reading, rhythm practice, and harmony, and then eventually dive into technique, ear training, and improvisation. Overall, I try to make every lesson engaging and make the information fun and accessible.
LESSON STYLE
First and foremost, I believe in helping my students explore and expand on their love for music. In order to accomplish this, I equip my students with the tools necessary to be able to express themselves on their instruments as well as hear a piece of music and understand it in musical terms. My pedagogy revolves around showing students the universality of music: how different styles relate to each other and how much overlap there is between genre. This way, a student can hear a piece of music that inspires them and learn it, analyze it, discuss it, and make it their own.
