Overview:
Hello! My name is Spencer, and I teach music lessons in and around New York City. I offer lessons in Violin, Guitar, Conducting, Mandolin, Music Theory, Music Composition, Film Scoring, and Songwriting. While my educational background focused more on music composition, I've performed as a violinist and guitarist with numerous orchestras and chamber ensembles, as well as several bands in different theatre productions. These experiences helped me grow not only as a performer but also as an educator. I've learned how much goes into making a strong musical ensemble, and what it takes to be a dedicated, collaborative performer. I am a fun and enthusiastic teacher who believes that everyone has the right to make and enjoy music. Whether you’re trying to get to a specific level or just interested in having fun and bringing more music into your life, I promise I will do my best to help you achieve your goals. Let’s make some music!
EXPERIENCE
For the past few years, I have traveled to students' homes for instrumental tutoring and private lessons. My experience has ranged from tutoring elementary school students to teaching adult beginners. I have also performed in several music ensembles that have included performers of all ages and skill levels. While I have more experience with students in the age range of middle school to high school, I am open to teaching most age groups because I believe everyone deserves a good music education. I make it my mission to help students get to their desired skill level and to make the process memorable and fun!
METHODS USED
While I have used the Suzuki Method, the Mark O'Connor Method, and my own personal combination of other technique books, I like to help my students create a curriculum, method, and schedule that works for them so that music can be a solidified and exciting part of their week. I like to help students set realistic and fun goals, while also incorporating other musical or non-musical elements that inspire or interest the student. For example, I may help a violin student learn the Suzuki repertoire; but in addition, I'd love to help the student learn how to play one of their favorite songs.
LESSON STYLE
I love to inspire my students and help bring more music into their lives. I achieve this by specifically tailoring my teaching to the needs and interests of each student. I strongly believe that students learn better when they are inspired rather than intimidated; that's why I regularly integrate positive reinforcement into each lesson, and then set realistic, fun goals that students can work towards with excitement. Music lessons should be fun, regardless of whether you're a elementary school beginner or a high school student auditioning for college.

Spencer's tutoring helped me be successful in a music theory class, which I started completely out of my depth; I had no prior experience with music theory and needed to catch up rapidly with some fundamental concepts. Spencer was patient, funny, and had great explanations for complicated topics. Highly recommended!

Spencer was a wonderful teacher highly recommended to anyone looking to learn how to play a musical instrument or even write songs. He is extremely knowledgeable of all things music and makes it easy and enjoyable for you to participate from as early as your first class. He teaches at your own pace and is always encouraging. I always looked forward to and had fun at my lessons (I took beginner guitar and song writing and still would be if I didn't have to move away from NYC for my job!) Spencer is amazingly talented in songwriting and playing...I'm convinced he will win multiple Tony's one day, so get him while you can!

I received private violin lessons from Spencer during my first year at the University of Miami. After learning from him in high school, it was great to know that I already had a history with him and he was able to find a baseline for me. He was extremely patient with my crazy schedule and encouraged me to keep going whenever I would get down on myself. I learned more about myself and the violin in that short time than I did in my 4 years in high school orchestra.
