Overview:
I've been a musician from a young age, with a focus on the keyboard, voice, and songwriting and composition. A graduate of renowed Westminster Choir College as a pipe organist focusing on classical and choral music for the church, I also have experience conducting choirs and leading worship services. I have a wide variety of interests, but one of my greatest joys is to teach music to students of all ages. I do not believe talent is necessary to learn the art of music, it takes discipline and dedication and a lot of love. Developing a love of music, means developing a love of practice too! I love helping people realize the skills they already have, by giving them a chance to develop. If you have fingers, you can learn!
EXPERIENCE
I've been teaching piano to students of all ages for over 4 years now, and recently started teaching the pipe organ. I love these instruments, they fulfill me, and I hope to pass my passion along to my students. I also love to sing, and enjoy accompanying and coaching singers in several genres. Whether classical or pop, I make sure my students are learning and working with music they enjoy.
METHODS USED
The first lesson is always a way for me to gage the level or ability and the goal for the student. I usually recommend a beginner book series for novices, but also use online sources and my own games and strategies. For older or more experienced students, I focus on specific repertoire they want to be learning (I provide a list of recommendations for them to listen to) as well as developing musical theory and technique, which is an important foundation for any musician. These exercises, although not exactly 'games', are meant to be engaging and meaningful for each student and correspond directly to the music they're working with.
LESSON STYLE
When I was 8 I had a piano teacher that didn't make playing very fun, and ever since then, I've been developing own my methods for creating excitement in a music lesson. I'm an outgoing person, and love to laugh as much as I love music. Communication is very important to me, especially when it comes to music. I enjoy getting to know my students, and developing a lesson plan that fits them perfectly. The teacher and student relationship has brought me boundless joy, not only through the things I've learned and the skills I've developed but also because the relationships have inspired me to become a better musician and person.
