I am an energetic and very motivated voice teacher from Colombia (my first language is Spanish). I love to work with people from different backgrounds. I have taught voice, piano, music theory, and guitar lessons in the most important schools of music in Colombia. I have formally studied piano for eight years, I also studied composition, and finally, I moved onto vocal performance, which is my main instrument. I did my Bachelor's at the F. U. Juan N. Corpas in Bogota. After graduating, I taught music for four years and I performed with many operatic companies both nationally and internationally. I got my master's degree in vocal performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where I received several awards.
I have taught music ever since my undergrad, I have always loved seeing people fall in love with music the way I did. I have been teaching music for over ten years now. I have taught at a massive project inspired by "El Sistema," its mission is to teach music to children of all ages in very impoverished neighborhoods. During my time there I realized how important art can be to a person who has virtually nothing, music was what kept them going. Making music, in any context, means to be deep in contact with who you are, your most vulnerable self. The world really needs this, the world needs people who can be vulnerable when communicating, this will make society more empathetic.
For all of my students, I have noticed that working on what they love instead of what they have to do is way more productive than following a specific book. With children, I have to be cautious in regards to choosing repertoire, as they have certain vocal ranges that should not be pushed when learning how to sing. With adults, I love to push the boundaries a little bit, to explore new techniques. I am personally classically trained, and I can dare to say that this allows me to sing and to play comfortably in any style that I want. a solid technique goes a long way!
I love to mix things, I remember asking one of my students to build a didgeridoo out of PVC pipe in order to work on his breathing. I love beatboxing and I have also incorporated some of its elements into my lessons. I love Latin music, this has been very helpful when teaching my piano students, as the rhythms are very unique and challenging for coordination. I really like to listen to my student's feedback whenever I ask them to do a specific exercise as it helps me understand the way their mind works when learning. This allows me to create a more personalized plan for the future.
In my four years with Sergio I was very happy with my progress and the work that we did together. Thanks to him I found my passion and I was able to develop my vocal technic in a way that allowed me to be admitted at the royal college of music in London, England and the Robert Schumann Musik Hochschule in Düsseldorf, Germany. Sergio is a great teacher who takes the time and dedication to make his students understand the vocal technic, he seeks to give his students different images and ideas so that they can understand, assimilate and implement the vocal technic. Besides being a very good opera singer, he is also an amazing human being and an excellent pedagogue which makes his lessons really enjoyable and enriching because of his personal experience and skills as teacher, singer and musician. I totally recommend Sergio as vocal technic and music teacher, and I'm sure that he will fulfill your expectations.
Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
Are you sure that's your only availability? The more availability you easier it will be to arrange a teacher for you.
