I am a fully-certified music educator of 18 years: I have taught both middle school band & choir to at-risk youth for 3 years, as well as elementary music at a private Christian academy for an additional 3 years. With the saxophone as my principal instrument of 32 years now, I also play many other instruments that I teach, including: Piano, Violin, Drums, Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, and Trombone. I have been a music educator in the public schools for over 40 years having taught in Austin, Texas and currently in Fort Worth, Texas. For players just starting out, I always start with the Hal Leonard Essential Elements book. It is a good place to learn the notes, as well as how to read music on necessary. As a trumpet player, I am a firm believer in the Arban Complete Comservatory Method, and Clarke Technical Studies. These are the backbone of my fundamentals. I started teaching guitar lessons in 1999 (20 years this year!) Since those days I've gotten two degrees and taught at colleges, and private institutions, as well as high school and middle schools. I've found that combining textbook music instruction along with learning to play some of the music the student is listening to keeps them growing and engaged.
