For those at a beginner level, I typically start with the basics of breathing, buzzing, embouchure development, scales, basic music theory, and basic instrumental proficiency. I also use the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book to learn basic solos and melodies. For those at the intermediate levels, I start to incorporate scales, solos, range, and standard trumpet books, such the Arban Conservatory Method, Clarke Technical Studies, and the Iron's Flexibility exercises. I like to learn who my student is before starting anything. I want to know what their interests are and what their view on music is. I then take that and bond with them and teach them in a certain way that matches their thoughts and personalities the best. I like to have fun and not be too strict as long as the student is doing their work, but if they are not staying on track the fun is replaced with more focus on concepts to be sure they are learning what is needed. I love to watch my students become better versions of themselves through the medium of music. I never want my students to be satisfied with reaching a destination on their goal charts. I want my students to become so infatuated with the journey, that they will seek to continue to look for new experiences to explore. I create this environment by keeping lessons diverse and dynamic. I make each student compile a list of goals for themselves, 3 big goals, 5 goals the lead to each of the 3 big goals, 10 goals to lead to each of the 5 goals, and finally, daily goals that will help us accomplish the 10 goals.
