As I mentioned above, one of my favorite parts about teaching is learning from my students. I encourage my students to take chances, perform often, and to not be afraid of making mistakes. All experiences help you learn, no matter what level you are. I encourage students to make the music personal to them and relate to it in a way that suits their personality. This involves my, as a teacher, getting to know my students and learning about their life outside of music. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to high school, I was the section leader in both Wind Ensemble and Jazz 1, so running the sectionals I had to have a proficient understanding of the style and instrument to relay that information to the other members of the section. In graduate school I was directly responsible for teaching many undergraduate saxophone lessons and in teaching the saxophone techniques course to music education majors. Read More

The most important parts of learning any instrument is reading music and posture/hand positions. On piano I typically use Faber's Piano Adventure series. I've found that this series teaches the fundamentals in a fun and easy way. On brass and woodwind instruments I would start a beginner with the Standard of Excellence series and supplement with the Rubank method books. With ukulele I like to start with Hal Leonard method books and then shift to Johnson's Ukulele Aerobics. Read More

First and foremost, I want to instill in my students a love for music. I want to show them how to express themselves through the art of music. Each student learns in a different way and at a different pace, so I adjust my teaching style to best fit the needs of the individual. I help my students set their own goals so that they can take ownership of their learning and feel they are moving forward at a pace that best suits their needs. Read More

This will depend on the level of the student and if they are in a band program in a school currently. I want to teach lessons as a supplement to what a student is learning in school, so I will work with the music and method book they already have. If the student is not in a band program, I would recommend starting with the Essential Elements band method. We will start with reading music, basic tone production, and good practice skills.
