Much of this depends on where the student is in their learning progression--if they are just starting out, then I will focus on the fundamentals of good trombone playing, and work with the basic books like Arban's methods for Trombone. I also have used the Hal Leonard series. But as soon as possible, I will move the student into both listening and playing assignments, starting with artists whose transcriptions are more accessible for both range and technique: Curtis Fuller (including transcriptions I created in college, which are really amazing for students), Hal Leonard's JJ Johnson collection, my own recordings and transcriptions, and Etudes for Jazz from Mike Carubia Jack Gale. My experience in teaching private lessons goes back to high school when my band director prompted the All-District and All-State band members to give lessons to our sections after school, which allowed me to immediately transition into giving private lessons as a college student. I have given music lessons at Mason's School of Music in Tallahassee, provided lessons as a self-employed contractor, as well as having served as a trumpet /trombone instructor with the Goodwill Band in Tallahassee. With these younger students, a certain amount of practice could merit a prize (i.e. iTunes gift card). Read More

I start every single one of my lessons the same way, by talking to my student. I ask them questions to gauge where they are at musically both with their performance and theoretical skills. I also generally spend the first few lessons trying out different teaching techniques to see which ones will be the most effective for that specific student. I use a combination of aural, visual, kinesthetic and interactive memorization techniques. Read More
