Overview:
I am a patient and caring instructor who loves working with students and sharing the passion I have for music. In 2009, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education. Performing all over the country with Drum Corps International has been one of the greatest experiences of my life as a musician. Primarily a percussionist, I have studied multiple instruments over the years including piano and guitar. Although I studied mostly classical literature during college, jazz and world music have been a part of my musical repertoire as well.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to my days in college. Whilst teaching various high school marching percussion sections, I quickly began learning how to become an effective teacher. From those experiences, I have expanded my teaching into private lessons as well as into other sections of instruments. Currently, I am instructing multiple high schools and organizations and am looking to expand my private teaching schedule. I often utilize my own experiences to help foster and enable the most productivity from students I teach. Patience, I believe, is the most important attribute of a teacher.
METHODS USED
To enhance the individual's experience I use background in music, current studies, and style preference to choose which methods might be best for the student. Younger students require more stock information and techniques such as Essential Elements, Alfred's drum book, or basic Fender guitar method for example. Adults, however, can take a more personal approach. Using an array of adult methods, or simply just finding books with your favorite songs seem to work the best when helping adult students learn.
LESSON STYLE
In the end, its not the ink on the page that we try to perfect on a piece of music, but the emotion that's behind it. That is the most rewarding part of music and has been the personal reason I have come so far in the activity. Using relevant insight and real life experiences, I teach and explain to my students how to do this and more importantly, why should they do it. Realistic goal planning, tracking and rewarding progress are great tools to use for students. Again, at the end of the day it really what inspires you that matters.
