Overview:
I'm an easy going, down to earth person who loves to teach by making the process fun because music is one of the purest joys in life. I am patient and I know how to work with various learning styles. I graduated from The Crane School of Music with a BM and have been playing piano for 20 years. I am a freelance studio pianist and have played genres ranging from Classical to Latin Jazz to Van Halen. I have taught private lessons for 8 years to all ages and levels and specialize in training students for NYSSMA and preparing for college auditions!
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching private piano/music theory lessons in my freshman year of college and have been teaching ever since. I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of music theory skills. Playing a mixture of classical and more contemporary music allows students to enjoy what they play and motivates them to practice. Lessons will be laid back and fun, yet challenging. I love to kid around, but I'm serious about making progress so I strongly encourage diligent practicing. I can teach a variety of genres so lessons with me don't need to be classically focused. I am very well versed in training for NYSSMA and college auditions so if you're looking to fine tune your pieces or want someone to take you step by step, I'm the one to choose!
METHODS USED
Lesson plans and techniques will be specifically catered to each student and how he/she learns best. For beginners, I use the Alfred Beginner books (Alfred Adult Beginner for adult students). Once students have grasped the fundamentals of playing and note reading, I'll add in Hanon technique exercises to strengthen and encourage finger dexterity. I'll then add in some solo repertoire and whatever fun pieces/songs the student wants to play on the side for pleasure. These books will also be used to practice sight reading so playing something enjoyable will promote practicing! If I feel the student has had enough time to develop their playing skills, we'll prepare a piece to perform in the studio recital. This technique goes for my adult learners as well. My intermediate/advanced lessons focus more on technique, musicality, tone, and preparation for NYSSMA, college auditions, competitions, etc.
LESSON STYLE
There is nothing I love more than sharing the gift of music with others. Seeing the smile spread across my students' faces when they play a song they love and then wanting to play it for loved ones is incredibly rewarding. I am passionate about my teaching and I set a very realistic pace for each student based on their learning style. I acknowledge the progress and achievements my students make in every lesson to encourage them to keep up the good work and challenge them to work harder. My lessons are tailored to the goals and interests of each student because music should never be a chore

Sara was a very hands-on teacher who is definitely an exception to the "those who can't do, teach" stereotype. Any time she gave me a new piece or I got stuck on something, she'd get on the bench and show me exactly how it's done. She's an amazing sight-reader and got me ready for my college auditions within a year and a half. Everything from ear training to memorizing full pieces and I was accepted to all 4 of the colleges I auditioned for. She was a lot better than the other teacher I had to get my ready and I liked that she was younger. She had gone through the audition process more recently and knew exactly what the schools wanted. Definitely couldn't have done it without her!
