Overview:
I'm a native born South Dakotan who began his viola studies at the age of ten. I always hope to open the eyes of my students and teach that confidence and hard work can not only progress them in learning music but with most skills in life. Most importantly I never want my students to feel that music is a burden! I want them to always enjoy themselves when they are practicing or performing.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience takes me back eight years when I began tutoring younger students while I was still in high school.  I love working with students who are excited to learn because I find that I learn a lot from those students.  I think that regular practice is vital to learning and making improvments on a musical instruments.  I also understand that we all have busy lives, and sometimes we don't have as much time to practice as we would like.  I also love it when my students bring me music that they want to learn because a lot of times they will introduce me to new pieces in this manner, and when they really want to learn a piece I can see them getting excited about practicing it.
METHODS USED
I am a firm believer in building a strong technical base for my students.  I do this through scales, arpeggios, etudes, and other excercises.  I think it is essential to learn the geography of your instrument because having strong technique makes learning other music so simple!  I teach mostly out of Suzuki books, but I also have supplementary materials that will accompany the Suzuki pieces.
LESSON STYLE
It's one of my favorite things to see a student finally get something that they have been working very diligently on.  After I get to know the student, I start to understand how much I should assign them to learn.  Sometimes I assign small chunks of larger pieces, and other times I like to challenge a student by giving them some optional excercises or pieces to start working on in addition to what they already have.
