Overview:
Patient, positive-oriented, personalized instruction in Guitar, Bass (upright or electric) and piano.  Modern, holistic lessons in all aspects of music incorporating both traditional knowledge and styles with the latest research in the Psychology of Music. Choir Director: Folsom Public Schools Columbia University, MA: Music and Music Education. Many years of active performance experience. I teach out of Davis, California, just East of Sacramento.  The most important thing is to develop a love for music and the habit with practice. I love to teach. Materials are selected based on the student. Generally I provide well rounded lessons with selected songs, learning to read, understanding music theory and ear training. Guitar students learn how to read, play and understand classical guitar and learn how to play all kinds of songs.  I teach the guitar as a musical instrument, not mechanically so my students learn, understand all kinds of music.  I add natural ear training so everyone's ears improve as well as their singing. Bass students start off learning the bass, how to create melodic, funky bass parts.  I teach them to understand what they are doing, improve their ear and sense of rhythm. Piano lessons are modern, positive oriented, pedagogically organized so the students achieve much success and can learn and play many songs.  I have extensive research and knowledge of the Psychology of Music.  This includes how people learn and the effect of music studies on increased intelligence.  Music studies have been proven to improve academic performance. I also can teach classically trained keyboard players improvisation and how to play in a contemporary ensemble. I will help select  a beginner instrument. Personally, I love to play upright bass in local orchestras and jazz ensembles.  I also play classical, jazz, and rock guitar.  I worked my way through college strictly as a multi-talented musician. I am a health and fitness enthusiast.  I am an environmentalist and love hiking in Northern California.   My special interest in research into the Psychology and Neuroscience of learning to play music.
EXPERIENCE
Currently Choir Director and Conductor, Folsom Public School. Exploratory Music. Fretted Strings and Keyboard. Columbia University, MA: Music and Music Education. Berklee College of Music, Guitar. SUNY at Old Westbury. BS Early Childhood Education and Music. I worked my way through college mostly reading and playing Shows. I have performed classical, jazz, pop, rock and country. In Florida I played for 12 years with the most active big/jazz in Florida, Swingtime. I play with the University of Davis Symphony Orchestra.  Decades of private teaching experience.
METHODS USED
I offer well rounding instruction individualized for each student. Teaching songs are a fun way to learn.   Then I gradually introduce reading methodologies, carefully selected modern materials that match the students learning style. I'm a strong believe in building a solid musical foundation.  I also have a lot of propriatary materials to help teach theory, improvization, techniques and additional songs. In addition, as a holistic teacher, we include the science and history of music. I help them with the materials so they are successful.
LESSON STYLE
I am positive oriented, energetic and enthusiastic. We generally use a three pronged approach, technique, reading and playing songs.  I carefully select more modern materials that move at a reasonable rate and are solid from a pedagogical approach. I teach guitar, bass and piano.   Lessons are highly individualized for the students learning style, desires, abilities and goals.  Most importantly, I love to teach. I enjoy working with students of all ages.  I will start a student once they have begun to read,  and it's never too late to start.  I've taught students from 3 to 92.
