Overview:
I have been teaching and performing for over 35 years. My career has included teaching concert, jazz and marching bands at the middle and high school levels as well as college and at my own private studio teaching snare drum and drum set at all levels and all styles. Although I maintain an active performing schedule, teaching music has always been a passion for me. I get the greatest enjoyment in providing an exciting lesson to students who want that special experience with music. At my studio I use the best in providing an educational and FUN experience using play a long tracks, two drum sets and performing with the student. Jazz, funk, rock, Latin beats and solos. The best in drum set instruction!
EXPERIENCE
Since 1977, I have been actively teaching all levels of music with drum set and snare drum being my primary instruments. Over the years I have developed an outstanding teaching style and lesson delivery. It is imperative that a variety of music be studied to keep the students interested and excited, with a balance of technique and also a "students choice" of what they would like as well. I always strive to provide a fun and educational experience to all students! All styles will be learned, and at all times I keep the students best interest at heart.
METHODS USED
After 35 years of teaching all levels of music instruction I am well versed in what it takes to create an interesting, educational and FUN experience with music. I teach ALL LEVELS and STYLES of drum set! My studio is fully equipped with everything we need: Smart Music play a long, two electronic drum sets, PA system and more. Instructional methods include all band programs such as The Standard of Excellence series and more. Drum set instruction uses a customized book of jazz, funk and rock beats and solos published by me with additional exciting music for all instruments provided at no cost. If you want to learn everything about how to play the drum set or snare drum, lets get started!
LESSON STYLE
One thing that has inspired me above all else is my continued passion for music and teaching. Although officially retired from public school band teaching, I have continued to teach privately in my studio, at the colleges and with live performance around the Raleigh area. I believe that once the students get excited about music, whatever genre we work on, that excitement will fuel the desire to practice! I always play along with the student, to demonstrate proper technique and use play a long tracks to provide a "live band" atmosphere. In our lesson we focus on three main areas: 1. Technique. 2. Learning new and interesting beats and solos. 3. Review and application. Fun, educational and exciting!

I had the fantastic pleasure of studying djembe rhythms with Bob and absolutely loved it. His enthusiasm and teaching style worked for me achieving the goal of developing my skills with rolls and solo riffs. I found greater confidence and direction on strengthening what skills I had . Sad our schedules and distance prevent us from continuing.

Mr. J. was my band teacher for several years and there are few people I have met that are as enthusiastic, passionate, and knowledgeable about music as he is. He always took the time to make sure each student was getting the help they needed and that they enjoyed themselves in the process. With Mr. J. as your instructor you will not only be learning from one of the best out there, but you'll be sure to have a great time while doing it!

I am a former band student of Mr. J and loved being in his class. I believe every student has a memorable teacher and he would be mine! He was lots of fun, very passionate about what he does & always had us laughing until it was go time! He treated us as musicians, not just students. You're sure to love him.
