ABOUT

Overview:
I am a piano teacher specializing in beginning students, ages 5-65.  Currently, most of my students are children. I also work with one or two students who have Asperger's Sydrome and with one student via skype.  I travel as much as 30 miles to see my students and several of them also come to my studio.  My goal is to make the piano lessons as enjoyable as possible, while also teaching a basic approach to reading music and technique. Students seem to learn best when they are taught at home and on their own instrument.
EXPERIENCE
Teaching has consumed my entire career.  I have designed training video materials, taught writing and public speaking to adults, taught children in the classroom and on-line.  Although I have played the piano for many years, I began teaching piano about seven years ago and today teach over 20 students in Fairfield County, CT. Nothing is more exciting than watching a student progress and become more proficient at the piano. Gradually, the degree of difficulty for each piece increases as the student increases his or her mastery.
METHODS USED
I use a variety of teaching approaches, including Hal Leonard, Alfred series, Faber and Faber, and Bastien. I also work with music that the students ask to learn to play--generally music that they listen to on disc or via youtube. Often we listen to a performance on youtube followed by a search for the sheet music. Then we practice the piece several times. This involves reading the notes, playing the melody, playing the chords, then playing melody and chords or base notes together. Finally, the student practices the piece
LESSON STYLE
My goal is to enable students to enjoy themselves while learning to play the piano.  I derive particular satisfaction when a student masters a particular piece of music after practicing hard in my studio and at home. Students are motivated best by learning to play a piece of music that interests them. This may be jazz, blues, classical, bossa nova, or some combination of all these styles. Most students will not become concert pianists but the goal is enabling them to play what they like and to have a fulfilling experience.

Richard is the best piano teacher anybody could ever have... my 7 year old daughter eagerly waits for her class every week. She is always ready to practice her songs. Richard’s style of teaching inspires and motivates my child to do her best! He is patient, very soft-spoken and friendly. He is truly a student’s ideal teacher. I would highly recommend him.

Richard is wonderful! He is kind and knowledgeable and my daughter thoroughly enjoys her lessons with him. His musical suggestions for learning are spot on but he is open to my daughter's ideas, as well. Richard is surely top-notch in our book!

Dick is a very like-able gentleman and my 12 year old daughter has enjoyed her lessons with him. He is interested in what she wants to play but also helps her to fine tune her skills and learn more skills.
