ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
BM, UMass Amherst, Music Education
Overview:
Hello! I have been teaching private low brass lessons in Western Massachusetts for the last four years. In the past I have been the Brass Instructor at the Eagle Hill School in Hardwick, MA and I am currently the Low Brass Instructor at the Pioneer Valley Regional School in Northfield, MA. I earned my Music Education degree from UMass Amherst in May 2014 and have a passion for teaching music. I love playing the tuba and have playing experience in many areas including orchestral, classical wind band, community band, dixie land band, contemporary ensembels, chamber ensembles, marching band and more.
EXPERIENCE
I have experience teaching and working with children ages 6 weeks through 18 years old. I have worked as a student teacher and teacher in the Northampton, Springfield and Ware Public Schools Systems, a camp counselor and child care worker thorugh the Hampshire Regional YMCA, and am currently the Assistant Teacher at the Four Winds School in Gill, MA. Of all these experiences, teaching private lessons has been my favorite medium for teaching so far.  I love teaching music in a one-on-one setting because is one of the most personal ways to share the love of music with others. When working in a private lesson setting, the teacher can attend to every student's individual needs and really get to know them as a learner, musician, and artist.
METHODS USED
For beginning students who are children, I prefer to work out of whatever method book their school music teacher is having them work out of, for consistency. As they advance, I will recommend different resources and books based on the student's specific needs and areas of strength/weakness.  For intermediate or advanced students I assess what level they are at and where their strengths and weaknesses lie, and from there assign the appropriate resources and books. As they advance to solo repertoire (usually exposed at first through district audition music), I then love to explore with the student what solos and genres of music they would like to explore further. For adult beginners, I prefer to take a less-traditional route and really explore with them what they what to learn musically, and help guide them through learning their instrument while also exploring different facets of expression and musicianship that younger students often cannot access until they mature.
LESSON STYLE
I strive to be a fun and engaging teacher while still holding my students to a high expectation of musicianship and responsibility. During every lesson I am constantly assessing what the student is feeling passionate about, struggling with, excelling in, and enjoying about music. At the end of every lesson I set realistic practice goals for the week that will challenge the student without overwhelming them. As students learn to take ownership and responsibility over their own practicing, they grow to care more and more for their instrument and the music they make.
