Overview:
Don't let the formal wear fool you! Regardless of your age, experience, or the music you like, I can teach you or your child to become an excellent guitarist. I have taught at the University and High School levels and enjoy working with beginners as well. I can share with you my knowledge and experience as a performer, composer, and lover of music. Whether you are looking for basic or advanced technique, how to interpret a great piece of music or just want to learn to play pop songs by ear, I can help you realize your goals on the electric, acoustic, or classical guitar. Will come to you.
EXPERIENCE
For over 35 years I have been teaching guitar. I started out playing rock and roll and when I got to the college I knew I should start studying classical music. So I have become very comfortable teaching students how to play popular music as well as learn advanced technique. It really depends on what the student wants: if they like to play for their own pleasure, in a group or ensemble, or develop skills for a professional life in music. My experience has taught me that learning the fundamentals, one step at a time, and encouraging creativity are all any student needs.
METHODS USED
My approach is very intuitive. First let's be sure we are holding the guitar properly and have the correct hand position. Technique - develop the hands separately and then integrate. Scales, barring, arpeggios. I like to introduce the metronome, and exercises to improve rhythm. For reading music and pedagogy, I begin with the old Mel Bay Volume 1 and for classical students Sagreras studies. Most importantly, I ask the student "What are you interested in?" and be sure that we are connecting on that level as we move forward.
LESSON STYLE
How is the student doing? If a child, what are the parents saying? Is the student making progress week to week? It is all about communication. What additional opportunities can I provide for the student's development? Each student is different and the more we can agree on our goals for the lesson, and for their long range development, the better the student-teacher fit will be. I am always open to learning from the student what it is that they are looking for with their music making and tailoring my teaching to their needs.
