EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching for the public schools in Philadelphia and Norristown Area for at least 24 years General music and Choral Music. Teaching privately since 1983 - currently: drums, percussion and keyboard lessons. I have worked one summer program for the Consortium of the Arts teaching a drum circle class. Upper Merion Library: drums and keyboard lessons. In addition, I have taught drum and keyboard lessons . at the Point Breeze performing Art Center. I always find out the interests of all students and capitalize on the interests in my lesson material and instruction. I stress the importance of structured practice that is engaging and mostivating. Students are encouraged to do performances throughout the year. am a music educator currently working with Kindergarten students teaching general music- invoking playing small percussion instruments, showing expressive movement using Classical Music. I put on Winter and Spring Concerts featuring songs the students have learned in class. I feature the children as soloists in performance.
METHODS USED
In the beginning, I do a pre-assessment to see what abilities and readiness they have for the instrument they are to study. I try to find out the interests of all students.I choose appropriate books that are age appropriate. Goals are set and the format of the lessons are explained and laid out. Students will have a book that I will write assignments in for each lesson. Progress is monitored weekly and shown to each student to show progress and areas that need improvement. Lessons will focus on total engagement between students and material to bring out the best of each student.
LESSON STYLE
My main goal and reward would be is to bring out the best in my student. Each student grow and develop an appreciation for music. It is crucial that my students feel an independence to grow musically in the areas of beat ,melody and the expressive qualities found in music. Encouraging students for their positive achievements in their musical journey in their lessons as well as their performances in the concert setting is vitally important. I feel their should be an open communication between teacher and the learner for musical growth and creativity to transpire.
