Departmental Honors in Music

Town Hall Performance: Thesis presentation, Piano Concert. Voice Concert

Overview:
Music and the arts are my life's passions. I grew up in a musical family where I was constantly exposed to every genre of music from boogie-woogie (played by my father on our piano) to opera (which we heard over the radio every Saturday morning).  I graduated from Hood College for Women in Frederick, MD,  with a Bachelor of  Fine Arts in Applied Music, specifically in piano and voice. Although I had never had any formal training (I taught myself to sight read and play piano) until college, I was the first music student in 69 years to qualify to do an honors thesis in music. My thesis was "The Influence of Claude Debussy on the Evolution of Jazz in the America. " I presented my thesis at a Town Hall Performance in which I also sang and played a number of compositions by Claude Debussy. My classical training in voice was augmented by my study with Joseph Victor Laderoute, a visiting Professor from Peabody Conservatory. My training provided me with the necessary qualifications to audition for and to be employed by the San Diego Opera Co. I sang in the ensemble and had some small, but significant supporting roles.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching piano while still a student in college. This was great training, because I was able to directly put into effect, with young people, all the methods and techniques that were so essential to my own development as a pianist. I continued teaching private lessons in my private life and began teaching voice lessons as well. To this day, my greatest joy comes from helping my students develop their musical talents and using them to perform for their peers and concert audiences. My years of performing in musical theater, opera, nightclubs, and as a professional church soloist have giving me the advantage of being able to teach many styles and genres of singing. A number of my recent students have gone on tho win scholarships to major Music Schools and Universities with famous music programs. And some have gone on to have successful careers in musical theater. I am always happy to welcome new students to share the benefits of my decades of experience.
METHODS USED
My teaching methods tend to be "old school," classical style, which means I incorporate a certain amount of basic music theory in every lesson, regardless of the level of the student. In my experience, having a foundation which explains how things work and why things work is valuable to the complete experience of music. I assess each student on the basis of their own level of competence and experience. For piano students, I like Bastien, Thompson, and Alfred for piano, and I will select whichever I feel is best suited for the student. For voice students, I, again, assess the individual based on the range, vocal development and their preferred genre of music.  All my students are given breathing and vocal exercises as well as compositions to learn and develop in their chosen genre.
LESSON STYLE
I want my students to look forward to their lessons. I want them to be fun while instructive. I try to maintain a relaxed but professional atmosphere. I like to use examples of current performers who are very successful in their own careers to inspire students. One of these is my own son, who has performed leading roles on Broadway in musical theater and had sung in Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Theater, in New York City. I try to make my students realize with real life examples that their dreams and goals in music can and do come true.
