Overview:
I'm an enthusiastic and knowledgable strings and piano teacher, as well as a performing cellist, based in Brooklyn. I love working with both children and adults. In either case, my teaching focuses on personal expression, creativity, step-by-step technical guidance, and creating a personal connection during lessons. My goal is for my students to be able to teach and learn on their own, and that's something that's really rewarding to watch take shape. I have incorporated many sources into my teaching, including training I recieved at schools where I've taught: color note-reading for young children at Park Slope Music Lessons and science-based learning methods at Sage Music. I received my degree from Mannes: College of Music in New York in 2006. I moved to Boston soon after to continue intensive private studies with George Neikrug (www.neikrug.org). My performing career has brought me everyone from Thailand (to play new music by Thai and American composers) to New York to appear on MTV to Vermont for an intimate chamber music festival. I enjoy exploring many different eras and styles of music and can play baroque cello, as well as standard and contemporary classical. I've also worked and recorded with many local bands and songwriters over the years, appearing on over twenty albums. My teaching website is: www.dinnersteinmusicstudio.com. My performing website is: www.nickdinnerstein.com.
EXPERIENCE
Teaching is as much a part of my experience of music as performing is. I began teaching at the beginning of college (over 15 years ago), helping a 5-year old cello student to practice. Since then, I've started many children and adults on cello, violin, and piano. I have also taught piano, coached chamber music groups, and taught theory and music history, all of which have helped enrich my teaching of cello. My experience performing with songwriters has also added a lot to my lessons, as I'm open to different styles and incorporate improvisation, arranging, and composition into lessons, depending on the student's level of interest in each.
METHODS USED
Through years of study with my primary teacher, George Neikrug (an Emeritus at Boston University), I have learned that no matter what the challenge is when playing an instrument, it can always be simplified and reduced to the basics. I aim to make my teaching so clear that a student will gradually learn to teach themselves. I also believe that playing an instrument should be physically comfortable, so I guide my students to a relaxed approach to the cello. In terms of emotion in music, I emphasis how the emotion evolves over the course of a piece (even a short piece for a beginner). I also encourage singing to help my students discover the emotions of the piece and make it their own. Last, but not least, I encourage personal creativity, whether that interpreting a piece in a very personal way, or having a student write their own music or make their own arrangements.
LESSON STYLE
In terms of overall approach to teaching patience, encouragement, understanding, and inspirations are some of my best tools. Each student's personality is different, of course, and my job is to figure out what is most inspiring for each student and what they respond well to. While self-discipline is an important part of learning an instrument (and to learning anything in-depth) I've found that when students feel inspired, they commit to their instrument and that they find it to be very gratifying. I believe that the first step to playing an instrument is the creation of a beautiful sound, and I make sure the my students can create that in the first lesson. I've found that it's the tone of the instrument that draws so many students to it and it's a love for the sound that keeps them interested. For those who have an interest in it, I also teach improvisation and basic composition. Theory (including note reading) and technique (scales and other exercises) are assigned alongside pieces, but in a creative way, so that students find them fulfilling to pratice.
