Associates of Arts Degree, Highline Community College
I am an active Musician in the Seattle Music scene. I currently play with Carrie Akre, Leanne Wilkins and the Weathered Souls, Charles Street Messengers, and Stereo Sons. I have been playing/studying the Drum Set for over 25 years. I've studied Percussion at Humboldt State University, Seattle Central Community College, and The Seattle Drum School.
I have been teaching professionally since 2001. I started at the Rock School in Kirkland teaching drums and Band 101. Shortly thereafter, I started teaching drums privately out of my own home studio. Over the last 14 years I have taught hundreds of students ranging in age from 10-65. I have also taught students with special needs and learning disabilities privately and through Rock School.
During Rock School's Summer Camps over the past 14 years (typically 3 camps per summer), I have taught groups of 5-10 kids at a time in all aspects of musicianship, including learning the instrument, writing songs as a group, recording, and live performance preparation/execution.
Currently I teach Drums, Band 101, Beginning Guitar, and Beginning Bass.
I usually spend the first several minutes of the first lesson talking to the student about their goals, interests, musical tastes etc. I try and help them to feel comfortable because I know lessons can be nerve racking. Next I run through my warm up routine, consisting of several exercises utilizing rudiments, while focusing on consistent time, tone and dynamics. Next, I work on specific beats targeted to their skill level and personal tastes. During this section we work on our reading. I spend the last bit of time usually working on something fun and more musical. This might consist of a specific "fill" or it might be plugging in a guitar or Bass and "jamming" on some of the ideas we've been working on.
I have been Teaching professionally for 14 years. In this time I have gained a lot of experience through trial and error on how to shape my lessons towards the individual and make them more effective for the students growth.
My real teaching strength is in my ability to play several different musical styles. I stay current with music trends, but I am well versed in classic styles as well. I highly encourage my students to use the tools I show them to develop their own voice on the instrument and create their own music. I stress the importance of Music as art and to keep it fun.
Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
Are you sure that's your only availability? The more availability you easier it will be to arrange a teacher for you.
