I am a saxophonist originally from Wyoming, but am now located in the greater Dallas - Fort Worth area! I attended the University of Wyoming and received a bachelors in Saxophone Performance in 2016. I then attended the University of North Texas to pursue a masters degree in Jazz Performance (2019). During my time at North Texas, I was lead tenor in the Two O'Clock Lab Band, and can be heard on their album "Two More Twice" (2017). I now teach private lessons and master classes throughout the DFW metroplex, and I perform frequently throughout the region leading my own groups and a as a sideman, as well as in multiple top 40's/wedding bands.
Outside of performing and learning for myself, I am passionate about sharing my knowledge with younger musicians! I have taught privately for 9 years, and was a Camp Counselor at the University of Wyoming Summer Music Camp from 2013 - 2015, and the Head Camp Counselor at the same camp in 2016. Since moving to Texas I teach lessons at multiple high schools in DFW. Having the opportunity to teach and watch younger musicians grow is one of the reasons I continue to pursue music. My background in jazz, theory, and classical saxophone allows me to teach a wide range of musical interests that students may have!
I aim to structure my lessons in a way that not only teaches saxophone and music, but also in a way that shows the student how to practice these things in an effective way. For beginning students who have never played saxophone before, I recommend any beginning band book you may already have, but feel that it is best to wait until after our first lesson to buy a book! For older or more advanced students, I like to focus more on structuring lessons to help the student achieve their musical goals.
One of the reasons I enjoy teaching privately so much is because it allows me to focus on the needs of individual students. Every person is different, and learns differently, especially when learning music. I encourage growth in my students by giving them the tools to be better, and making sure to challenge them along the way. But most importantly, I always aim to make sure that students are fun and working towards their musical goals. Seeing students grow and advance inspires me to be a better musician myself!
Michael is a great teacher. He is able to teach new concepts and fingering on sax to my 13 yo daughter who has a strong musical background. He leverages what she already knows and yet has given her some tips that are helping her on her other two instruments. He is on time, great demeanor. He connected easy with her and he helped her get excited about playing alto sax! I couldn't be happier and have recommended Musika to friends.
Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
Are you sure that's your only availability? The more availability you easier it will be to arrange a teacher for you.
