Overview:

I'm a dedicated, passionated and motivated musician who loves teaching and working with students of all ages. I started drumming in 2008 and it was instanteously life changing. I've dedicated towards shifting my enitre life into the musical arts and drumming. Last year was a milestone in reaching that dream as I transitioned into teaching my own drumming class and I traveled all across the country learning the business side of music as well. I regularly play with my band 3-4 times a week and can offer practical advice on how to get started playing gigs in addition to musical instruction. I've worked stages all over the country including the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles where they hold the after party for the Grammys. I wish to share my passion for music and one day build my own drumming school that will target helping those who cannot afford instruments and enabling them to play.

EXPERIENCE

I've been teaching actively since 2010. I started by vounteering with a local afterschool program that helps lower income students. I started as a reading buddy but quickly realized I could use my musical skills to help teach and introduce children to the drums. I then proceeded to develop my own program over the course of 3 years until I received an opportunity to implment the drumming program on a contractual basis through Austin Independent School District.

METHODS USED

For beginning students who are children I seek to understand what made them interested in drumming and what excites them about the drums. I'll then teach them each component of the drum set and proceed to work with them on learning a basic rock beat. This will enable me to play with them on guitar so they can actively feel what it's like to play with another person as soon as possible. I use a similar method for adults except with adults I inquire what theire overall goal for learning the drums is and go from there. Determining whether a student wishes to start a band and start playing out versus learning for hobby is essential towards developing the students abiilty and desire to play.

LESSON STYLE

The Music Lesson by Victor Wooten heavily influences my teaching style. I love seeing a students face light up when I teach them a beat and then start playing guitar over that beat with them and we start communicating on a musical level. Often times within the first lesson. I believe sparking the fire within a student to practice and better themselves stems from gaining insight into the possibilities of what they can accomplish. Jamming and playing music right away helps make the music lesson fun and enjoyable. Usually I will make up a song on the spot while I'm playing with a student so they can see what it's like to keep the beat for a guitarist/singer. Last year I got to showcase two of my students at the end of the school year in front of the entire afterschool program, staff, teachers and students. Watching my students face light up as the crowd applauded was one of the best feelings in the world.
