Overview:
Music has been apart of my life since I was a baby, and I have always been drawn to its captivating allure.  I started saxophone when I was eleven and began playing in jazz bands when I was thirteen.  But it wasn't until my freshman year of college that my musical journey really started.  While at the University of Wyoming, I was the lead alto in the top Jazz Ensemble for three years in a row, and I was in the top jazz combo both my junior and senior year.  I was fortunate enough to share the stage with jazz legends such as Dave Douglas, Bob Mintzer and the Yellojackets, Eric Reed, and Dave Pietro. When I moved to New York, I was introduced to another world of music and jazz.  Purchase College and the New York City jazz scene has introduced me to some of the greatest musicians in the world.  I now perform in some of the Purchase College ensembles, and I lead my own Quintet made up of fellow Master's students that performs at Jazz Clubs in New York City.
EXPERIENCE
I have extensive teaching experience, and although I was a performance major, I took several educational classes including Jazz Techniques.  I have been teaching lessons to public school students since sophomore year in college and I have a great track record with my former students back home.  I have taught saxophone lessons of all ages and abilities, beginner piano lessons, beginner guitar lessons, and violin lessons.
METHODS USED
For me, music is something I enjoy spending time doing, whether it's practicing, performing, composing, or teaching.  I am a firm believer that fundamentals and good practice etiquette is important, however, I don't believe that anything should come before the pure enjoyment that music brings.  I like to keep my lessons fun and exciting, focusing on what the student would like to improve in.  I see myself as more of a guide than a high-strung instructor who forces students to play rudimentary excercises over and over.  Fundamental excercises are but a means to reach a way to better express ourselves as musicians.
LESSON STYLE
I like to find what gets my students excited about music.  The reason we take lessons is to better ourselves, which means we all have musical goals.  As a teacher, I want to offer students ways that I have tried and tested that helped me improve and that continue to help me to improve to this day.  I know what it is like to go through the struggles of learning to be a musician, and I still go through some of these struggles today, but I have learned what it takes to overcome them.  As teachers, we need to facilitate the students eagerness to learn, and I have had a lot of success doing this by being patient and encouraging.

My son really enjoys playing and learning the saxophone with Michael. He is young but is a real pro and has a knack for teaching and inspiring students to challenge themselves.

Michael taught me saxophone lessons when he was in school at the University of Wyoming. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot from him, and I was able to make the All-State Honor Band my first year trying out! I don't think I could have done that without him! I just wish he didn't move away!
