2018 - Principal Bass of the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra

Overview:
Hello! My name is Melissa and I am a recent graduate of NYU with my Bachelor of Music degree in Double Bass Performance and my Master of Arts degree in Music Education. I am excited to be able to share my love for all the string instruments, especially the bass! I play with the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra as their principle bassist and am grateful for all the music opportunities that I have encountered. I have performed at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, Symphony Space, the National Opera Center and the DiCapo Opera Theater. I am classically trained but dabble in music theater as well!
EXPERIENCE
I have experience teaching in the New York City public school system as well as having private students here and there. While I was in school, I student taught at a public high school and a public elementary school in Brooklyn. The students at both schools were so inspiring and helped me realize that I want everyone to have the joy of music in their lives. I taught beginner strings at the high school. Many of the students couldn't believe that they had learned an instrument in under three months. At the elementary school I taught 3-5th grade strings as well as general music. The students there were so grateful to have instruments to take home and practice. It was inspiring to watch them really strive for knowledge of their instruments every day.
METHODS USED
I ask students why they want to have lessons on their instrument. This will drive how I chose repertoire for the student and how we will shape the end goal for each lesson. I have Essential Elements, Sound Innovations and Alfred's Music Theory to start off beginning students. It's important to learn a little bit of theory while beginning to play an instrument. I also have duets and other solo works for more relaxed learning on the violin, viola and cello. For double bass students, I have beginners music to advanced to prepare for more things like recitals, NYSSMA or auditions.
LESSON STYLE
I am a very relaxed and chill teacher. I believe that the student should want to play their instrument because it gives them a sense of joy or possibly an outlet for creativity or expression. Crafting the lessons to the student is important. What the student likes about music and doesn't like about music, what kind of music they want to learn, what their goal is with their time with me and how often they see themselves practicing will help gear the lessons towards that student. We are ultimately trying to enjoy ourselves, I never want a student to dread coming to a lesson or to feel stressed out about not having practiced that week. We will work through it all!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
