Overview:
I'm a dedicated and passionate instructor who enjoys working with students and familes. I love sharing what I know with my students! In 2011, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Trinity Lutheran College with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Worship degree. I have performed in a touring ensemble in California and in the greater Seattle/Everett/Tacoma area I've performed in open mics, gigs, community band, community theatre, musical theatre and choir. I am also a singer-songwriter and have performed original songs. I was recently seen performing guitar in the orchestra for Cotton Patch Gospel with The Red Curtain Foundation and as an actor and accompianist in It's A Wonderful Life, A Live Radio Play at Warm Beach's dinner theatre, 2014.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching a small handful of students just before I entered college. Life with music is not only a journey but a lifestyle. I encourage and enrich my students in the hope they take their studies with them for life. I train my students classically with a mix of modern and childrens music. As they progress and have come to me with realistic goals, I tailor their studies to help meet their needs. I also work in the Montessori setting, which I absolutely love, and I have incorportated some of the movement into younger students lessons to make learning fun and interesting. Students are encouraged to perform in recitals and to reach out to their communities musically.
METHODS USED
For children ages 4-7 I start with Dogs and Birds Animal Notes Edition from the UK. As they progress, I introduce them to the Primer Faber Series books. Adults begin with Faber series and I incorporate Hanon Virtuoso exercises as they progress. For children guitar they will begin with Alfred's Kids Guitar Course and Hal Leonard studies. Adult guitar will begin with Hal Leonard and William Leavitt studies. I provide material about composers and music studies from Thompson, Michael Aaron, Bastien and other books.
LESSON STYLE
Melissa's studio is ran professionally and with care. Her teaching methods are designed specifically for your learning ability and needs. She encourages her students to be the best they can be. I've been told students learn more with me in a few lessons than they did in three months with other instructors. I individualize my students lessons to fit their needs and goals while striving for an excellent quality education. Some of the qualifications I prepare you for are as follows: an accompanist, music teacher, professional performer, worship performer, singer-songwriter, theater and/or musical theater performer and open mics. I help prepare you for auditions, judging panels and recitals. I teach an in-depth classical study to all of my students in order to build a strong musical foundation. My students learn to play classical, worship, pop, jazz and many other styles they are open to or suggest. I also instill, teach and offer a love for improvisation to any student open to exploring the freedom of playing outside the lines. Some of my students take lessons along with their parents. This creates opportunities for duets and so much more. Many of my students compliment my patience and say they have learned so much in so little time. Life with music is a journey but not only that it becomes part of your lifestyle. Being a good dedicated student will bring so many wonderful moments and rewards as you take the journey with your instrument of choice. I have students entering talent shows, performing at assemblies, choir, open mics, musical theatre and locally for the elderly during Christmas. About your lessons: I host a Winter and Spring recital.
