I have been playing music my whole life. I first began with the piano, and transitioned to saxophone. Picking up various string instruments along the way. I have started three local bands around town, of which I compose for. When I lived in Boston, I was the first seat tenor saxophone for the Colleges of the Fenway Jazz band. I have recently graduated from CU Boulder. I am inspired by all types of music, however I primarily play jazz and funk. I have been teaching music for the past 5 years of my life, and am looking forward to meeting you!
I have been teaching music for the past five years. I think that it is most important to understand how music works, mechanics are instrument specific and come with time and practice. When my students remain engaged and excited about making their own music, through learning and creating we become musicians. My goal is to encourage engagement, creativity and exploration through music. I have been trained classically and have transitioned to a diverse range of outputs. I organize everyone orchestras with people who have not touched an instrument in years, compose and play for a local ten piece funk band.
When we are first getting to know our instruments, it is imperative to play. I don't mean play as in practice scales, but feel our instruments, learn by mistakes. makes noises that we think are fun, and make noises together. we will learn how to play through understanding how notes fit together, what makes a chord, and how to understand where melody differs from rhythm. We will learn to read sheet music, play from fake books, and keep a steady rhythm. It is most important for my students and I to play together, this way my students will learn to play the music that exists within them.
