Overview:
I'm a passionate, motivated, and sensitive instructor who loves to fully engage with my student's musical journey. I strive to allow my students to fall in love with music in the way I have and share in the beauty of art and performing. I am a recent graduate from Eastern University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in General Music, Voice. I have performed internationally with a variety of companies, ensembles, and productions including multiple world premiers with the International Opera Theater of Philadelphia . I have a strong passion for classical, sacred, opera, jazz, and folk styles of music.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience began in highschool, throughout college, and to the present day. I've collaborated and assisted choir directors, and non profit organizations with my musical and teaching abilities for years. I began to privately teach piano and voice at age twenty-two as I was finishing my studies at Eastern University. Since then , I have grown tremendously not only as a performer, but as an instructor. I have experience teaching students as young as four and as old as fifty-seven. I love to be challenged as a teacher through age, personality, strengths / weaknesses or my students, and musical talents. I believe that every individual has potential and I feel it is my job to discover it and supply the tools for them to grow and develop not only as a musician, but as a person.
METHODS USED
I believe that a huge percentange of teaching is psychology, attunement of my students, and understanding individual's needs and wants musically. For beginning piano students, I use a mixture of theory, ear-training, technique, and song books throughout my lessons through companies such as: Bastien Piano (KJOS), Piano Adventures (Nancy Faber), Alfred's basic piano (Willard A. Palmer) along with a few others. I strongly focus on individual's personality, ability, learning style in choosing books and creating lesson plans. Along with learning basic piano skills (finger positions, scales, chords, reading bass and treble clef, key signatures...etc), I place a strong emphasis on posture, releasing of physical tensions, and emotional affirmation. I teach classical, pop, jazz, and folk styles of piano for beginners. For my beginner to advanced levels of voice, I create my own lesson plans based on each individual. I focus on the foundation of the the voice: the body, release of tensions, breathing, support, vowel placement. Freeing the natural voice. Discovering the authentic sound in everyone's self. I use theory, eartraining, sight reading, solfege and other skills throughout my lessons whether it is in warm ups, or learning songs. I believe full application is necessary especially for my younger students. Musical memory is easily formed as well as bad vocal habits therefore I am highly sensitive to what I am sharing and displaying in my studio. I teach styles of singing including: classical, opera, sacred, contemporary, pop, folk, and jazz.
LESSON STYLE
As a young music student in High School, a huge influence of my musical journey was of the positive influence of my private vocal instructor. If it wasn't for her, I am not sure if I would have pursed my talents through college and now in professional performances and instruction. I strongly believe a private instructor can make or break individuals especially in regards to one's passion for music. After years of studying with various teachers, I quickly realized the important role I must play as an instructor and the pressure I must apply to myself and the duty I must fulfill for the growth and journey of my students. One of the most rewarding experiences I can experience as an instructor, is witnessing the progress and growth of those I teach. My heart warms as I see the work I apply in my studio is validated through positive results from my students.
