BA, Michigan State University, Media Arts and Technology
I am a multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter with a passion for teaching and making music. I began playing the flute at age 3, and for 22 years since then, I have worked to develop my musical talents and learn new instruments. I graduated from Michigan State University with a BA in 2014 where I was a singer and keyboardist for the alt-punk band Basement Shark Attack. In addition to the flute and piano, I also play the guitar, and ukelele. Teaching music has brought joy to my life, which I share with my students through patience and laughter in the classroom. I believe learning music should be fun, and I try to foster a fun-loving environment for my students where they can learn at their own pace.
I have taught flute, voice, guitar, piano, and songwriting to a diverse set of students with ages ranging from 3 years old to adult. Getting to know my students and help them develop their talents has brought so much joy to my life. Every student is different, so I adapt my lessons to their individual interests, rather than presenting them with a one-size fits all teaching approach. I want to help my students pursue their OWN musical path and have fun doing it! Performing and creating music is my passion, and I have performed in solo, modern rock band, and classical band settings. I also love to write my own music and in 2015 I released my EP onto Itunes, Google Play, and more. I want to share this passion with my students and help them discover the amazing talents they possess!
Piano: For my piano lessons, I like to use pianimals for my very young students, and the faber piano books for older children and adults. The books move at a great pace and make learning, gradual and easy. I also spend some time teaching my students chords separately from the lesson books, because it makes it easy to pick up and play any song! Guitar/Ukelele: For guitar and Ukelele I teach a combination of theory, tablature and chords in each lesson. I pull my materials from different sites like Ultimate Guitar and guitarnick.com. I try to teach a new scale or theory concept per lesson. Theory is great and can open many doors for a musician! Voice: In my voice lessons, we will work on developing healthy vocal habits and better vocal quality through vocal exercises and scales. We then apply these techniques to the songs you want to learn. I also use a voice method book called the Full Vocal Workbook Series which touches on additional vocal topics such as sight-singing using solfege. Flute: For flute, I use the Rubank method books. These are wonderful books and very thorough. They gradually teach music reading and good flute technique through their songs and scales.
My most important goal as a teacher is to get my students engaged and enjoying the process of learning their instrument. Students who are having fun will continue to play their instrument for the longest and take more initiative to learn! That being said, I am always exploring new ways of teaching in my lessons, because every students is different. I am not a strict teacher, because I want my students to be at ease, but I do follow a curriculum that leads us down the right path and it always ends in progress!
Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
Are you sure that's your only availability? The more availability you easier it will be to arrange a teacher for you.
