Overview:
I am a rock, country, jazz and classical guitarist raised in New Mexico, educated at the University of North Texas, and recently moved back to my hometown after 12 years of teaching and playing in Brooklyn, New York. I am a contributor to Premier Guitar and Guitar World’s Acoustic Nation, who recently credited me as a “master guitar teacher,” and am the founder and owner of GuitarWorks International. My father Steve was my teacher from the age of 7 until he passed away in 2016 , which makes our love of music a bit of a family business. Together we have spent nearly 70 years dedicated to the instrument, and I continue to share this enthusiasm with players of all ages and experience every day. I am the lead guitarist, musical director and bandleader with the Rocket Queens all-female tribute to Guns N Roses and the Suite Unraveling (Tzadik). I am proudly endorsed by Godin Guitars.
EXPERIENCE
Lily, my father, Steve, and younger sister, Arielle all teach and play the guitar professionally, which makes our love of music a bit of a family business. Together we have spent nearly 90 years dedicated to the instrument, and continue to share our enthusiasm with players of all ages and experience levels,  every day.
METHODS USED
I believe in meeting my students where they are at--every set of hands, eyes and ears is unique and it is important for us to find a common ground in terms of interests AND learning style. I customize my teaching approach around these two things. A lot of teachers will skip 'the basics' to try and keep your business by showing you full songs and chords right away. My experience has been that a lifetime relationship with the instrument comes from starting small, being consistent, and setting manageable goals. I'm big on technique and theory, but with real-world applications that are tailored to the guitar, not to a keyboard or method book. I also have fast and capable ears! So, whatever you are interested in, I can figure out on the spot and then show to you.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching philosophy. My belief is simple–that the guitar is for anyone and everyone who wants to play. My approach is practical–real-world advice for real-world guitarists. Real people in all walks of life. True enthusiasts. I want everyone to love playing the guitar as much as I do. My experience is invaluable–thousands of miles on the road, hours spent onstage, decades spent practicing our craft…this is the unique resource at your fingertips–literally. It’s this simple: music is meant to be played by PEOPLE. How many times have you heard someone say “I tried to play the guitar but my hands are just too small.” Or maybe: “I’d love to play an instrument but I’m just not naturally talented.” Or, my personal favorite: “My last teacher said I shouldn’t learn any music theory, because it will ruin my creativity.” Years of experience as a teacher have shown me this simply isn’t true! The guitar is meant for ANYONE and EVERYONE who wants to learn to play. But, in order to learn to play the guitar well, everyone has to learn HOW to play it. Regardless of your taste in music, the skills that every guitarist needs in order to succeed are universal. Your hands, fingertips, thumbs, wrists, and shoulders all need to work together to make the instrument really work. Get these things in line with each other and the guitar can be a real joy to play. Skip them and you may be faced with tired hands, slow progress, and a sense that the guitar is just not for you. Rookie teachers will often skip the basics and go straight to the ‘good stuff’ in an attempt to keep your business. But a lot of times, this makes the ‘good stuff’ seem impossible to play. Here’s the thing–it isn’t! As a lifelong teacher and player, I recognize that certain things about the instrument–technique, theory, and basic fundamentals of music–are universal. My system is designed to lay a foundation for your long-term success as a player by showing you what you need to know in the order you need to know it. I picked up the guitar for the first time when I was seven years old. My father was my first teacher. As a result, some of my earliest childhood memories are of the instrument. They’re amazing memories! The wood, the strings, the sound–I was instantly in love. For myself, in my years as first a student, then a performer, and now a performer and educator, I’ve learned a lot about what it means to play. I’ve learned even more about what it means to teach. Here is what I believe: I believe that the instrument is for everyone. I believe the right attention from a caring teacher can open doors that you might otherwise think are frozen shut. I believe that all music–be it Bach, Led Zeppelin, John Scofield, Metallica or BB King–can be a tool for developing a lifelong relationship with the guitar. I believe that your music is YOUR MUSIC, and I believe in helping you get where YOU need to go. All styles and experience levels welcome. No genre is too foreign and no hands are too large or too small. I have overseen students from their first notes to their first performances onstage and beyond, have helped budding professionals fill in the gaps in their music theory, and have helped correct errors in technique that have caused students to give up the instrument due to frustration or physical pain. Many of my students have gone on to study music at reputable universities, and I have also helped actors and vocalists on Broadway and on the road with big-name acts hone their instrumental skills. Looking forward to sharing my love of the instrument with you, Lily
