2011-2014 Phyllis C Wattis Scholarship (SFCM)
I am a passionate and detail-oriented private teacher who has experience working with students of all ages and levels. I graduated with a Bachelor of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 2014 and will graduate with a Masters of Music from the Manhattan School of Music in May 2016. I have performed with many professional ensembles including the Bergen Symphony Orchestra, New York Repertory Orchestra, Tactus, Ohio Light Opera, San Francisco Wind Ensemble, Symphony Parnassus, and UC Berkeley Symphony. I am a member of the Phoenix Quartet, a NYC-based chamber ensemble. I have studied with some of the most respected clarinetists of the generation, including Mark Nuccio, Luis Baez, Jerry Simas, and others. I have performed in venues all across the country, including the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Davies Symphony Hall, The New World Center, San Francisco War Memorial, Royce Hall, and live over Los Angeles Public Radio.
I have had an active teaching schedule since high school. In my senior year at the San Francisco School of the Arts high school, I served as the Clarinet Coach at Presidio Middle School. In the summers of 2012 and 2013, I was the Clarinet Instructor at Cazadero Music Camp, where my duties included leading daily masterclasses, coaching ensembles of all size, leading sectionals, and more. Since moving to New York in 2014, I have maintained a private studio and have taught students through the Harmony Program and MSM Precollege.
Upon assessing a student's level (this takes place in the first lesson), I will present material that is suitable for the student's level. I am a firm believer in a solid foundation, and the majority of each lesson will be spent teaching how to correctly play the clarinet. I incorporate repertoire and exercises as well, but my priority in lessons is strengthening a student's fundamentals.
I am an advocate of challenging a student. Everyone moves at their own pace, and my goal is to instill in the student a sense of challenge and a genuine desire to master the clarinet. I set weekly goals that require the student to practice outside of the lesson. I always emphasize that it is important to put in focused and intelligent practice time.
