Overview:
Academically trained visual artst and musician. Started classical piano and violin at the age of 4, composing at age 8. Love to teach - have taught both privately and institutionally for the past 15 years in both art and music to children and adults. Love to to make connections between art and music, as well as trying to figure out how each individual learns. Teaching is a challenge and I love it.
EXPERIENCE
My instruction experience started in high school when I was given the opportunity to lead the choir at my church as organist. My first piano students began then as well. While being accepted to Eastman School of Music, I decided to pursue the fine arts instead; while an art student I also taught violin and piano privately. Later I taught art to students K-6, and have taught piano, violin, composition and visual arts privately for over 10 years. I am a student still myself. I believe we must continue to seek new musical challenges over our lifetimes.
METHODS USED
My teaching primarily focuses on music appreciation; understanding music, its structure and effects are fundamental in being able to perform on an instrument. I do not have a single approach to teaching as I've learned every student learns quite differently. I currently teach both children (youngest being 6) to adults (oldest being 72). I have experience teaching children with learning disabilities as well - specifically children with attention deficit disorders. I do prefer My First Piano from Faber Piano Adventures for early piano students. A blend of Suzuki, Solfege and other catered methods are used for violin students. Since music making is quite physical, I do focus on body movement and coordination as much as theory.
LESSON STYLE
The goal for me as a teacher is to teach sound practice skills. In short, if a student loves to play and knows how to approach musical challenges and problems, they are equipped to continue on as a instrumentalist for life. This is my goal. Listening is just as important as playing. Developing the ear is as important as developing the hands.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
