ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
BA cum laude, Boston University, Linguistics and Anthropology with a minor in Music Theory and Composition AS with high honors, Harold Washington College, General Sciences
Overview:
I have been playing music since the age of four, including violin, piano, acoustic and electric guitar, and flute in band.  I took classical piano, music theory, and composition at the college level at both Harold Washington College in Chicago, IL, and Boston University, in Boston, MA. In addition to playing in various bands, I compose and perform my own music, ranging from classical style piano solos and arrangements of 16th-19th Century catches to more alternative pop/rock songs.  My long term goals involve maintaining a working teaching studio, while writing compositions for film, and other projects, and occasionally touring.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching while in High School, picking up some of the extra students my mother was not able to fit into her schedule.  I have been teaching part time ever since, through college, and more recently building up a larger student base.  I recently relocated to Chicago from the country, and 6 of my 7 students at the time decided to stay with me and switch to Skype lessons.  I am a fan of the Suzuki method and reccommend consistant practice, repetition, and reasonable challenges with rewards that students are able to work toward.  I include music theory in my teaching right from the start, which aids in long term retention, as well as a deeper understanding of what they are playing.  I teach everyone four years of age and up, and also have experience working with students of all ages with learning disabilities.
METHODS USED
For beginning piano students I start with Suzuki method, or possibly John Thompson's Teaching Little Fingers to play.  As the students advance, I like to compliment their lesson material with outside songs that the student has requested, or fun, typically simpler pieces to keep them motivated and show them how quickly they are learning. For Guitar I use the Hal Leonard Gitar Method, accompanied with songs of the student's choosing.  I may sometimes arrange these myself for the student, to make them simpler, or more to the level we are working on at the moment.
LESSON STYLE
My biggest strength as a teacher is my absolute patience.  Everyone struggles with something different when learning music, and being able to keep my calm, and find infinate different ways of explaining the different principals of music has made me a favorite of my students.  I also believe in providing reasonably challenging pieces, and then providing the support that the students need to succeed with these challenges and become better players.  I do a lot of arrangements for my students so I always take their personal tastes into the song selection.
