Overview:
Music has been a huge part of my life ever since I can remember. My mom started me on violin at age 4, and I decided to branch out to the piano at age 9. Both instruments have brought me many rich opportunities. I can't think of more fun times than I had at summer music camps, making new friends and meeting inspiring performers. When I graduated from high school, I was honored to perform in an orchestra that toured Europe. It was a cultural experience second to none. Shortly thereafter, I decided to try my hand at folk music, which has been a lot of fun and challenging; the improv skills demanded by the genre truly honed my musicianship. My life has been enriched by all my musical experiences, whether in professional settings, church functions, or just jammin' with friends!
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching as part of my training in college, about 12 years ago. I have since had many opportunities to teach, at schools and conservatories, and in students' homes. I've taught both instruments fairly consistently, with some breaks when my babies were born. I've taught mostly beginners, though some intermediate and advanced students have come my way. I've taught from age 3 to 50 and everything in between. Many of my students have continued their training past their time with me and have accomplished great things.
METHODS USED
For violin teaching, I am a staunch Suzuki supporter. I believe the method can truly bring out a great musician in every child if it's taught properly. I teach note reading very early on, but ear training is key to sensitive musicianship. I also supplement with pieces outside the Suzuki curriculum, encouraging my students to choose pieces that catch their interest. For piano, I have experience with all of the popular methods -- Faber, Alfred, Bastien, etc. It's important to me that students recognize notes and intervals from a very early level, and I find this is best taught through songs and pieces the student already recognizes. Although most of the methods provide familiar tunes, I find I need to supplement; to do this, I encourage students to find familiar pieces, within their level, that they enjoy. Many times that includes Top 40 tunes, but some choose classical or folk tunes.
LESSON STYLE
In my teaching, I aim to bring out the best musicianship in each student, but I also believe it's not just up to me. Up front, I let the student know that they can't get much out of the lessons if they don't practice! That being said, I do my best to encourage the student by pointing out all their strengths. I'm not there to intimidate, but to cultivate a love for the instrument. I let the students pick out some of their own repertoire for learning important techniques. Also, my current and former students have really enjoyed ear-training pop quizzes.
