Welcome to my page and thanks for stopping by! I grew up in Southern California and have been playing drums for about 15 years. In 2017, I graduated from Musicians Institute with a Bachelor of Music degree in Drum Performance. Upon graduating, I joined Musicians Institute's International Outreach Team and toured Asia multiple times teaching clinics and playing promotional concerts on the school's behalf. I've also recorded and/or performed with a wide variety of artists spanning several genres including; Ruby Ibarra, Ann One, Artur Menezes, The Brothers Stone, Illa J, Open Mike Eagle, Aga, The Reals Stills, Joe Bagg (Jeff Goldblum), Dawn Bishop (Sergio Mendez), Lyman Medeiros (Michael Bublé) and many more. I have a love for performing/creating but I also love teaching! A good music teacher can open so many doors both musically and mentally. Music is my passion and I'd love to share it with you whether you are young or old, beginner or advanced!
I have been teaching private in-home lessons and at various schools since 2014. I currently work as a substitute teacher and teaching assistant and Musicians Institute. I have taught several international clinics at high schools and colleges in Korea, China and Thailand, but I have also taught all ages and levels of students. Although I'm proficient in a variety of styles, my specialties include funk, R&B, Soul, Hiphop, Neo-soul and Blues. I believe it is important to keep an open mind to a variety of musical styles and genres. The more musical genres a student familiarizes themselves with, the more opportunities they will have to play and craft their own unique playing style.
I tailor my lessons to each individual student depending on their goals and experience level. For beginning or casual students who just want to have fun, lessons may include learning songs of their choice, introduction to different artists in genres that interest them, basic technique and more. For intermediate or advanced students, lessons include; sight reading for drum set/snare drum, surveying different styles that they aren't familiar with, transcribing grooves/solos, analyzing playing technique and more. Whether you are an advanced or a beginner, my main goal is to learn and have fun. Learning music is a joy and while difficult at times, the reward of pulling off a new fill or groove is an amazing feeling I want to share with my students. Some of the books and teaching materials I use include: Stick Control: For the Snare Drummer, The Encyclopedia of Reading Rhythms, Fundamental Studies for Snare Drum, The Art of Bop Drumming and more.
I believe in a growth mindset: in other words, a person's talents can be developed through hard work, good strategies, and input from others. When creating a lesson plan for my students I take into account their musical, and cultural background. This helps me explain and break down concepts in a way that is respectful and helpful. While I do believe everyone has the ability to learn music, not everyone learns at the same pace, and that is ok! Although music is primarily an auditory experience, I employ different strategies if a student is having trouble. For example, some students benefit more from singing a drum groove while others learn faster by writing the groove down or programing it in a drum machine. Everyone learns differently and my job is to help you discover the best method for you.
I have had Julian as a drum instructor and at the recording studio for projects and he is prepared, professional, and has a signature groove. He?s patient and intuitive, which makes him a great musician and teacher.
Julian has worked with my son for several years and really helped him advance. They had a great rapport and my son looked forward to their sessions together. Julian has a relaxed but energetic approach to teaching, and his passion for music and drumming really comes through. He's very patient and accommodating. Responsible and reliable. Couldn't recommend him more highly.
Julian is one of the best at teaching the essentials skills for are drummer, which are a solid command of time, feel, and sound. As well as being knowledgeable in a wide variety of styles. He is also very patient and will always do his best in order to simplify any concept as much as it may be needed.
Julian was great with my son. He is very patient, attentive and reliable. His approach to teaching is a good balance of fun and book learning. I highly recommend him!
