Overview:
Hi! My name is Josh. I’m a guitar player and producer from Seattle, WA. I’ve always loved music and always had an affinity for the guitar. I took up clarinet and saxophone around middle school and started really playing the guitar in high school. I’m mostly passionate about metal and electronic music, but I love all styles and am always trying to learn whatever I hear that I end up liking. My favorite thing about music is how it allows us to connect. I’ve been really getting into the study of harmony throughout my college experience, so I’ve picked up some interesting ways to incorporate that into my practice routine and compositions. Contact me if you’re interested!
EXPERIENCE
I'm a novice teacher, but I've been in bands since my high school instrumental group. That was a jumping off point for understanding how bands work and helped me realize what dynamics work and which ones don't. Moreover, in the metal bands I would join later on, it would become commonplace to have to teach parts to other band members. This involved me dabbling in drums, bass, and lyric writing, and teaching said parts to others. Seeing how I've been gigging since 2013, I've learned to express what I know at different levels. I remember just starting out with reading tabs, so I can explain things in that manner or get more specific with specific notes and chord voicings. Anything that may aid in the development of a more complete musician.
METHODS USED
Younger students or beginners are likely to see me pull out a copy of the Real Book or other similar literature. Those types of lessons would focus on rudiments and technique, as well as effective practice methods so the gap between novice and intermediate can be closed efficiently. With more advanced lessons, I may focus more on repertoire, as well as more complicated techniques such as sweeping, tapping, and extended harmony. I also have plenty of literature that would help students to become proficient with scales, modes, and chord shapes.
LESSON STYLE
My aim is to first identify a student's goals so I can tailor lessons to their needs. If you want to be able to play for a tour, the requirements are a bit different than preparing for a school recital or audition. It also helps me to figure out how a student may progress. In turn, it's a good way to find a strong foundation. So if a student needs help with theory, but doesn't know their fretboard very well, I can tie in applied theory to fretboard drills. In my experience, learning while having a clear grasp of what you're working towards yields the best outcomes.
