EXPERIENCE
My experience with teaching goes back to my early 20's where I started to show a few friends of mine a few things on the guitar from there I went on to teach at a local music store for 5 years. That is really where I started to hone my teaching skills. My whole goal is to make playing guitar fun. I enjoy working with all different ages, students and skill levels. I like to start out beginner students with learning the fundamentals, how to hold the guitar and pick, getting the left hand and right hand working together, a few simple chords and melodies. With my advanced students I like to share my knowledge of jazz and classical and how that can be combined with other idioms that they might be interested in such as rock, country, blues, pop.I encourage students to bring in songs that they are interested in learning and from there i show them how they can play the songs with the techniques that I have supplied them. I encourage all my students to write their own music, go off and explore different avenues of music and guitar. What I really love about teaching is that I learn from my students as they learn from me and I love seeing a student develop into his own musical self/style from the tools that I gave him. Every student is completely unique and different and I love bringing that out and seeing that develop. I have worked with students of all kinds from young children to older adults, begginer to advanced. From young children learning simple kid songs to teenagers wanting to learn Led Zepplin and Rush to adults wanting to just learn simple folk songs. I have helped students get accepted in to music school, perform locally or at their youth church, write and compose their own music, audition for musicals.
METHODS USED
I approach every student differently based on skill level and interest, but I have consistent methods that I have developed over the years that I use. For beginners I start off by showing them how to strum, hold a pick, use the left and right hand, simple open chords and will have them typically, but not always buy a beginner guitar book. I recommend Instant Guitar by Berklee guitar professor Tomo Fujita. For my intermediate to advanced students I show them jazz and some classical techniques and concepts; improvisation, chord voicing, stylistic approaches, technique, feel, composing, ear training and music theory. I recommend my advanced students getting Berklee Press Modern method for guitar volumes 1 2 3 by William Levitt. I have students of all levels bring in songs that they are interested in learning. I believe this is key and helps keep the students interest and to me is so important with learning to play music. Also note you do not have to buy these books as I can supply and make copies of various things that I feel you as a student will benefit from, I own a library of guitar and music books.
LESSON STYLE
I strongly believe everyone learns differently and at their own pace. While my whole focus is to engage the student and keep it fun I stress the importance of daily practice. I totally understand that not everyone is trying to be the best guitar player or become a musician and everyone has their own life and schedule, but I believe a lot can be learned thru self discipline and learning to play an instrument. I encourage and have students set realistic goals that we can work towards together. Something that I have tailored to recently is having students perform in front of a an audience at a real venue where music is performed.

Josh is highly qualified and skilled. My son has high anxiety, but Josh puts him at ease during every lesson. The lessons are challenging. They help my son build his skills with music theory, which in turn help him feel more at ease in his high school jazz class. I highly recommend this young man. He is polite and communicates well. You will not regret the choice to have him as your teacher.

I used to take lessons when Josh was at the music store, and some of the best teaching I've had, and it gave me motivation to keep playing throughout the years. He's a very good teacher and very flexible and I'd recommend him to anyone wanting to learn

Being an adult, I can be set in my ways on technique and at times have limited opportunity to practice on my own. When I would have a rough week, Josh demonstrated patience and worked with me to get back on track. He is very friendly and has a way of looping you back in when you are feeling frustrated or down. There were many times I wondered if I should continue with lessons but he would turn my struggles into something positive. Josh really kept me interested in playing guitar and understanding music in general. Not only is he familiar with the guitar and plays very well, he is able to take his knowledge and share in a way that is easily understandable. Today, I'm actually playing guitar for a local band in my area and I'm very appreciative of the time I had to learn from Josh.
