Overview:
Music is an inexpressibly beautiful thing that I believe must be shared. I am a passionate and invested musician and instructor that only wants the best for my students. In 2014, graduated with my Bachelor of Music degree in Clarinet Performance from the University of Georgia and in 2016, I graduated with my Master of Music degree in Clarinet Performance from the University of Maryland. As an active performer and chamber musician, I love to make music with others and craft performances to be memorable experiences for those listening. I have had the opportunity to perform in Carnegie Hall and tour Europe as a soloist and recently I have won several sub list positions with orchestras in the southeast and Maryland.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience ranges from students of all ages and backgrounds. I began teaching clarinet and saxophone privately 5 years ago and have maintained a private studio while teaching at the University of Maryland and several music stores when I lived in the DC area. I strongly believe in a consistent practice schedule for all ages of students, as it keeps them more organized and allows them to visibly see the progress they are making. I encourage students to play music that they enjoy playing while also maintaining the strong fundamentals required for playing an instrument well. This music can range from jazz to hip hop to pop to classical and everything in between. I also believe that I can learn as much from a student as they can learn from me, so I try to tailor each lesson to the individual student's needs. Performances are strongly encouraged and I try to motivate every student of mine to join their school's band program or local community orchestra. I believe practicing and preparing music teaches students many important disciplined skills that will help them in whatever profession they choose, and, more importantly, it makes it a lot more fun!
METHODS USED
Every student is different and I try to be very attentive to the individual needs of each student. However, there are several method books for clarinet and saxophone as well as many different exercises that have been effective for my current students. For younger students or for adult beginners, I tend to start them out with the Essential Elements books or the Rubank method. I also try to start teaching scales at a young age because this opens up a whole world of possibilities for the student. Regardless of age, I believe that exercises and scales should always be balanced with something fun and occasionally I encourage my students to find music on their own that they are excited to play.
LESSON STYLE
Teaching should be a healthy balance of encouragement, inspiration, and challenge. I want students to feel good about themselves while also feeling like they are working toward something and pushing themselves to be a better person and musician than they already are. Setting weekly goals and having an assignment notebook are both crucial to this process as they allow the student and teacher to remember what skills can be improved upon and what aspects of their playing that are going well. My main goal in teaching is to help my students love music as much as I do! At the end of the day, that is what teaching for me is all about.
