Overview:
I am a professional New York State certified educator that is based in Nassau County on Long Island. I studied performance and education at LIU Post, in Brookville New York and Nassau Community College in Garden City New York. I have had many performance opportunities including Tilles Center, the John Cranford Adams Playhouse and various high schools in Nassau county with the Five Towns Symphony. I graduted in May of 2013 with my Bachelor's Degree in Music education and currently teach private lessons. I have studied under numerious accomplished cellists including Maureen Hynes, Benjamin Wolf, and Amy Camus. I have also participated in master classes with the Shanghai String Quartet.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience started when I was completing my associates degree. I began teaching one on one cello lessons to high school students, as well as fellow college students who were interested in expanding their instrumental knowledge. As I went on and graduated college I began teaching lessons for elementary students who play violin and viola in addition to cello lessons. I often have multiple choices for students to work on, if they do not have their own music. I believe it is important for the student to have a choice in what they study instead of having pieces "assisgned" to them. I like to take moments to enforce basic music theory skills into lessons to give students a greater understanding of the music they study.
METHODS USED
For students who are just starting out on an instrument, I use the Hal Leonard Essential Elements series. This method book has a balanced combination of etude examples with small songs that young students will be able to identify. It also has graphs that show proper posture. As the student moves through the method book series I will then introduce solo pieces for the student to apply their newly learned skills to. For more advanced players, I first make an assessment of their playing skill, then offer the student music that can challenge their abilities to become more capable muscians.
LESSON STYLE
With all the work that a professional musician has to go under, from scales, music theory, becoming highly proficient on their instrument, in the end it's all about developing an appreciation of music. I am always very mindful of a student's playing level and make my lessons adaptable to meet each student's needs. I always make sure that a student is getting positive feedback from my comments. Doing this helps to ensure that the student makes the time to practice their instrument.
