Overview:
I am a saxophonist/flutist/clarinetist and educator based in the DC area.  I am passionate about all styles of music, although I specialize in jazz saxophone.  I graduated from Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 2008 and immediately moved to Shanghai, China where I performed and taught music for two years.  When I moved back to the states in 2010 I lived in New York City for a year and then moved to Rochester, NY. to study at the Eastman School of Music.  After receiving my master's degree in jazz studies in 2013, I moved to the DC area to perform and teach.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching students of all ages on saxophone, flute, and clarinet since 2007.  During my time at Oberlin, I taught flute and saxophone lessons to non-music majors in the college.  When I lived in Shanghai, I worked for one year at an international school where I was an adjunct woodwind instructor.  I taught students from grades 5 to 12 on saxophone, flute, and clarinet.  And during my time at Eastman I was a teaching assistant for the undergraduate level jazz improvisation class. I currently teach privately in my studio in Brooklyn.
METHODS USED
Since no two students are the same, I try to tailor lesson plans to each student's playing level.  For elementary level students, I prefer to work out of the Rubank method books and if they are interested in jazz and/or improvisation, I supplement the lessons with etudes from the Lennie Neihaus Jazz Conception series.  Lessons are usually broken into three parts: warmups (tone production and scales), technical exercises (from the Rubank method book), and depending on the student's level I'll assign an etude for them to work on. For adults, I am a little less structured when it comes to planning lessons.  I prefer to find out what they would like to learn and get out of their lessons and then I'll create a lesson plan to fit their particular needs and interests.
LESSON STYLE
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing on of my students develop a passion for music. Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. When I was a student, what helped me the most was having teachers who not only challenged and inspired me, but who were also sensitive to my weaknesses and were supportive when I missed the mark.  I strive to bring this combination of strength and support to every student I teach.
