ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
BM, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Flute Performance
Overview:
I graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in flute performance in 2008, and have been pursuing a career in music ever since. I have always loved performing, and now have ten years of professional performance experience under my belt to share with my students. I have enjoyed opportunities to play with a wide variety of ensembles including: classical/orchestral, chamber music, contemporary ensembles, flute quartet, musicals, jazz combos, folk bands, traditional Irish music, and free improvisation accompanying poetry or narrative.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates all the way back to highschool when I was in charge of coaching the flute section on difficult parts as section leader in wind ensemble. During college, I took on my first private students, and I have now been teaching flute, piano, and violin in the greater Pittsburgh area for four years now. My teaching locations have included Batavia Studios in Mars, PA and Waddell's Music Center in Wexford, PA. At both of these locations, I have welcomed students from ages 4 to 60 and gained experience teaching piano, flute, violin, and music theory.
METHODS USED
My teaching approach is to match repertoire to the student's current needs. For example, a student who needs to work on building dexterity will be working on technical exercises while another student may be focusing on tone or dynamic expression in their weekly exercises. I typically start my beginning piano students with the Alfred's piano series in conjunction with the Finger Power series for building technique. For more advanced students, I prefer to use the Hanon Virtuoso Pianist series as well as scale practice and classical repertoire. New flute and violin students will start with the Essential Elements series or for more mature beginners, the Rubank series for flute and the Suzuki series for violin. Duet books will also be added as the student grows. On the other hand, if a student comes to lessons having already begun a series of repertoire they prefer, I will be happy to accomadate. I believe the most important part of teaching is to tailor each lesson to the individual student. What works for one student may not work for another, and it is essential to be open to new teaching methods and grow with one's students.
LESSON STYLE
In addition to a set repertoire of study, I always collaborate with students to work on repertoire they find fun and engaging whether that be classical, jazz, pop, or any other genre. I believe working on music that the student genuinely enjoys encourages practice and imparts a love of music that will last a lifetime.
