Overview:
I am a Fort Worth native with many years of performing and teaching experience. Throughout my musical development, I received extensive training in voice, piano, trombone, guitar, electric bass and percussion. I graduated from Texas Wesleyan University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Vocal Performance and was recognized as the Most Outstanding Music Major of the Year for performance as a vocalist and jazz bassist, an honor usually awarded separately to one vocal student and one instrumental student. I spent a few years in graduate school studying Vocal Jazz at the University of North Texas where I toured with the renowned UNT Jazz Singers in Atlanta and Los Angeles and performed with such acclaimed artists as Janis Siegel of the Manhattan Transfer and Peter Eldridge of the New York Voices. I was a featured soloist on many occasions including their 2015 album, Cant Help It. I spent ten years performing widely throughout Texas and beyond as a jazz singer and bandleader at live music venues as well as private and corporate events. I have since left the entertainment business to focus on teaching.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching voice as an independent contractor in 2010 at a local high school and middle school. In 2012, I was hired as a piano and vocal instructor at several private music schools in the DFW area and also began teaching students in my home studio. I’ve been teaching now for ten years and counting. I insist upon regular, consistent practice, which true musical development demands and without which both progress and enthusiasm for the music will suffer. I encourage my students to seek live performance opportunities in order to build their confidence and to overcome the potential for such things as stage fright, timidity, etc. and to attend as many live musical performances as possible for observation and enjoyment purposes.
METHODS USED
I spend much time discussing and working on technique and style but focus most heavily on execution, as a student may well understand a concept and yet lack the ability to execute. I will send a student home with a particular song by a particular artist, adhering to the students preferred genre, and ask that he/she not only memorize the lyrics and melody, but also make an attempt at executing/performing the song as the original or assigned artist did, afterward discussing the various factors that this might entail, such as inflection, the use of falsetto, etc. I also point the student toward what I refer to as Rabbit Holes, opportunities for the student to delve beyond the assigned artist/song and explore other similar artists, thereby expanding their knowledge and understanding of the music as well as their repertoire.
LESSON STYLE
I thrive on watching the students develop not only their abilities, but also their confidence! There is nothing more rewarding than seeing the shine in their eyes when they experience that breakthrough “I get it!” moment as the student realizes their own potential! Excitement and enthusiasm are contagious. The genuine pride and joy I feel for the student helps me to embolden them and encourage them to continue setting higher standards for themselves. Most importantly, it fuels their love and passion for the music!
