2014 - Seton Hall University EOF Completion Award

Overview:
I'm a very kind and strongly motivated instructor who loves working with young students and inspiring them to become great musicians with my passion for music, no matter what aspect of music it is. I graduated from Seton Hall University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education. While the flute is my primary instrument, woodwinds are my specialty. Thanks to all the internships and student teaching experience I have had over the last 5 years, I'm able to teach all instruments to all inquiring students.
EXPERIENCE
During my time at Seton Hall, I have completed 4 internships as well as my student teaching in different school districts throughout New Jersey, working with students at all grade levels. I have also taught lessons privately for a year during my freshman year of college. I also work as a substitute teacher in the Long Branch school district, at which I have assisted the high school band on many occassions throughout the year. I like to use every experience I had during my time as a student to make life connections with my current students to help them learn music in a way that is easy to comprehend. I like to expose my students to all kinds of music: from different genres to artists to different parts of the world. I try to make all my lessons fun to participate in while keeping their focus at all times. I like to show students that I truly and thoroughly enjoy what I'm doing; that way they can feel encouraged to take their musician skills to the next level and stay motivated to learn more about music!
METHODS USED
For beginning students, I typically start with a basic methods book for their instrument, for example: Standard of Excellence Band Method. Method books like this are great to enforce the basics of their instrument while working with the basics of music theory. I also like to use music theory websites to teach students more in-depth information about how music works: how to read, notate, identify, etc. Once the student is comfortable enough on the basics and is ready to move on, he or she will be introduced to learning solo repertoire and more advanced music excerises that will benefit him or her in case of future auditions and recital performances. For more developed students, they will work on advanced etudes, scale excerises, and solo reporitoire to futher their musician skills.
LESSON STYLE
When it comes to the content I teach my students, I like to keep it engaging and active. I have learned from my student teaching that hands-on activities and active lessons are the best ways to keep students motiviated and focused--we can have fun while learning new information at the same time! Nothing is more rewarding than seeing my students enjoy what they are doing and developing some kind of passion for music! It is very important to me that the student progresses at his or her own pace, making sure he or she is comfortable with the content. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students and making a realisitc, but reasonable curriculum to help accomplish their goals and making them eager to learn more. Sparking their interests helps me find ways to dig deeper into what truly inspires the students.
