Overview:
I have been playing drums since I was 10 in Washington DC which means I not only learned Rock and Jazz, but Go Go too! I studied drums at Berklee College of Music and orchestral percussion with the principal percussionist of the Boston Ballet. I am a patient teacher who is trying to help and inspire another person with the instrument I love, not to make them feel inferior. All of my lessons are done in a musical context meaning that we will work on something like rudiments while listening to music instead of a click. Practicing to click comes later with more advanced students. I have spent time with some of the greatest musicians on earth and they all share the same trait: the encourage! So do I!
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching for many years and that means teaching drums, percussion, conducting, orchestration and composing. I have also taught beginner piano for grade school children at the South Pasadena Music Center and Conservatory. At Berklee College of Music I tutored students in basic theory and counterpoint which means that I have a wide range of teaching experience that can be applied to a person who wants to be a better or new drummer. I can help a student learn to play the instrument for a band setting or school ensemble setting or prepare for a recital. Whatever the students needs are, I can accommodate them with the appropriate method.
METHODS USED
My methods are determined by what the student wants to accomplish. if they want to play in the drum corps then we will spend a lot of time on rudiments. if it's a Punk band they want to play in then we'll work on the style of drumming that will best suite that kind of band. All the while we will always work on our hand speed and strength and our basic rudimentary techniques because no matter what style you are playing, you will always need those to be solid. If a student wants to work on sight-reading we will do that as well. It really depends on what the student wants to get out of the lesson.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is to make sure we are covering a certain amount of technique per lesson with an assessment at the beginning of each lesson to see where we are with the "homework." Homework like anything , is important. So I will circle back and re-emphasize a lesson if it appears the student needs extra work on a particular technique or area of study. Playing musical examples is also a big part of how I can reach a student and inspire them. I can play them my favorite examples but I will also expect them to tell me what THEY want to use as inspiration.
