Overview:
I truly enjoy playing, writing, recording and teaching music. I've been playing music since my early teenage years; first in garage bands and eventually on more professional levels. I was co-leader and bassist of "The Source", a regionally successful alternative rock band in the 1980's. I was leader and sax player of "In The Pocket, an Oakland,California band in the 1990's. Today I have my own home studio. I have written and recorded 4 solo albums and have placed numerous songs internationally in movies, television and commercials.
EXPERIENCE
I've been teaching one on one for 15 years. I have taken a few lessons myself, and the teachers I remember best are the ones who made the experience fun. That is still the bottom line for me as a teacher. I have a good knowledge of music theory. I like to show each student the theory behind music, but I like to do it in a lighthearted manner. I pay attention to the student/parent and the direction and goals they want to achieve. As a professional sax player I have improvised a lot. I am good at passing that knowledge in a painless way. Improvising can be fun! As a bass player I am great for the High School jazz band student, or the person just wanting to learn the bass parts of his/her favorite songs. All ages are welcome!
METHODS USED
I am a believer in the "be lighthearted and stay relaxed" school of thought while teaching AND learning music. If you practice relaxed, you will ultimately play relaxed. Repetition is also a very powerful tool. The act of playing something over and over is priceless. When teaching saxophone and improvisation I use the Jamey Aebersold play-along songs a lot. It establishes a good habit of always playing to a rhythm. Your playing doesn't exist in a vacuum. There is always a rhythm bubbling beneath it.
LESSON STYLE
I get a true joy out of seeing my students progress and grow as they explore more fully the world of music. Each student moves at his/her own pace. I try to tune in to that. I shape the lesson to the student. I also must state again that a light hearted approach to teaching is at the heart of what I do. I can nudge the student to focus and dig a little deeper, but in the end all of the information is worthless without some fun attached to it. Music has saved my life and given me great joy. If I can pass some of that joy on to the student I've done my job.
